, is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join their practice. This is a PRN opportunity. This position performs a range of duties which includes preparing the patient to see Attending Physician (preliminary exam, medical history, & testing), preparation of examination and treatment rooms, performing basic and routine vision screening examinations, administering eye medications, cleaning and maintaining ophthalmic instruments and assisting physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures.

The Ophthalmic Technician will train other assistants and act as a scribe for the physician.

Examples of Duties (List does not include all duties assigned)

  • Can take an ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity. Can perform lensometry, refractometry, basic muscle balance testing, tonometry, assess pupils, confrontation visual fields and gross external exam. Administer diagnostic tests.
  • Make introductions and establish rapport with patients. Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines. Also assists with patient education.
  • Perform lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, and ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT), Optical Biometry (IOL Master and Lensstar).
  • Act as a scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into EMR and overseeing patient flow.
  • Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Complete requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician, with full documentation in patient chart.
  • Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by physician.
  • Assists with in office procedures ensuring proper consent is obtained. Responsible for set up and clean up from procedure.
  • Assists in training other assistants.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols, complies with all state and federal regulations. Understands and accepts responsibility to report suspected potential errors to supervisor or compliance officer.
  • Maintains positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
  • Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring that equipment is wiped down in an appropriate manner, battery powered instruments are seated properly in re-charge wells, slit lamps and projectors are switched off under covers.
  • Follow all safety procedures as per guidelines.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality both internally and externally.
  • Adheres to expectations of the established corporate compliance plan.
  • Actively participates in site-level Quality Improvement Activities. Each employee will contribute to the continual evaluation site performance as well as the implementation and measurement of improvement activities that increase the quality of care provided to patients.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Education

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience

None required, 1 year ophthalmic experience preferred.

Certification/License

None required. (COMT) Certified Ophthalmic Technologist credential preferred.
