Job Description & How to Apply Below
Ortho - Trauma Unit
Welcome to 9 East! I would love to share more information with you about the interesting patients we care for, along with all of the accomplishments of the staff. I'm Allison Marcum, MSN, MBA, RN, NE-BC and the current Nurse Manager of the Orthopedic Trauma unit located on 9 East.
Our patient population ranges from teenagers to geriatrics who have experienced a traumatic injury. These injuries can be orthopedic related or not. We most often see patients who have been involved in motor vehicle crashes, ATV accidents, motorcycle accidents, traumatic amputations of an extremity, brain injuries, falls, and osteomyelitis.
We work closely with physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, and case management. At times, our patients have very complex discharge plans and require collaboration with physicians, primary nurses, the team leader, case manager, and nurse manager. "Teamwork makes the dream work" and is an expectation of all team members. Nursing Technicians and RNs rely heavily on each other to complete daily tasks for our 30-bed unit.
It is very fast-paced environment as well as fun and exciting. Every patient is a new chance to learn something new!
The ratios on our unit are 1 RN to 5-6 patients, along with NTs and Health Unit Coordinators. We provide a targeted twelve weeks of orientation, with eleven of those being on the unit with a preceptor. Our preceptor program is designed to pair each orientee with a preceptor that has the same learning style as them, i.e. tactile, auditory, or visual.
Are you wondering what your next steps will be? Professional Development and career growth are very important on 9 East. Completion of orientation on the unit along with the Nurse Residency program will be your goals for year one. Participation in Unit Council is also highly encouraged. Certification in either the orthopedic or medical-surgical specialty is your personal goal after you complete two years on the unit.
This unit went from 0% certified RNs to 68% over a 3 year period! We also highly encourage nursing staff to participate in the QUEST program, submit posters for MAGNET and NAON conferences, and participate in Shared Governance Councils.
We are a highly driven and teamwork oriented unit. We look to recruit individuals who have a passion for patients who have experienced trauma. If you're also looking to constantly challenge yourself by exploring new opportunities, then this is the unit for you.
