Position Summary
The Outpatient Oncology Infusion RN provides specialized nursing care to oncology patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, blood products, and supportive treatments in an ambulatory infusion setting. This nurse ensures safe medication administration, ongoing patient assessment, symptom management, and education while delivering compassionate, patient-centered care. This position is designed to support Teams across multiple locations associated with the Cancer Institute.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Treatment Administration
* Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy, and supportive IV therapies per established protocols.
* Verify chemotherapy orders, dosing, and lab parameters in collaboration with oncology providers and pharmacy.
* Perform comprehensive patient assessments before, during, and after infusion treatments.
* Initiate and maintain IV access including peripheral IVs, PICC lines, and implanted ports.
* Monitor patients for infusion reactions, adverse effects, and treatment complications.
* Provide emergency care and intervention as needed (e.g., anaphylaxis management).
Patient Education & Support
* Educate patients and families about treatment plans, side effects, symptom management, and when to seek medical attention.
* Reinforce medication adherence and home care instructions.
* Provide emotional support and therapeutic communication to patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Care Coordination
* Collaborate with oncologists, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and interdisciplinary team members.
* Coordinate laboratory results, treatment schedules, and follow-up appointments.
* Facilitate referrals to supportive services such as nutrition, social work, and palliative care.
Documentation & Compliance
* Accurately document assessments, interventions, patient responses, and education in the electronic health record (EHR).
* Maintain compliance with institutional policies and regulatory standards (OSHA, ONS, state board requirements).
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives and safety programs.
Core Competencies
* Knowledge of oncology pharmacology and treatment protocols.
* Excellent critical thinking and clinical judgment.
* Strong communication and patient education skills.
* Ability to manage multiple patients in a fast-paced outpatient environment.

Work Environment
* Outpatient oncology infusion clinic or ambulatory care center.
* Prolonged periods of standing and frequent patient interaction.
* Exposure to hazardous medications (appropriate PPE required).
Position
Qualification:
Required Qualifications
* Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
* Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required;
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
* Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
* Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification (ONS preferred or required within specified timeframe).
* Minimum 1-2 years of oncology or infusion nursing experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
* Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) credential.
* Experience in outpatient or ambulatory infusion settings.
* Proficiency with central line management and infusion pumps.
* Strong IV skills and assessment abilities.
