Position SummaryThe Oncology Nurse Practitioner is a highly specialized APRN focused on providing comprehensive cancer care to Thompson Oncology Group (TOG) patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The Oncology Nurse Practitioner (ONP) will provide care to hematology‑oncology patients in collaboration with and under the supervision of their supervising physician. As a member of the TOG provider team, the ONP will follow established treatment protocols in their practice.
The ONP will be a primary representative of the TOG provider team in the community and amongst our referring partners and will be expected to display professionalism, communicate clearly, and be an excellent collaborator in support of patients. The ONP can expect a dynamic daily clinic where patients may require anything from primary care services to complex chemotherapy side effect management.
- Triage telephone calls from patients, physicians, hospitals, and home health and hospice agencies requiring medical intervention, collaborating with physician(s) as necessary.
- Perform evaluation and treat acute patient problems, including but not limited to oncologic emergencies, chemotherapy related side effects, and complications from cancer diagnoses.
- Consult with physician and other medical specialties as necessary; adjust processes as indicated.
- Perform history, physical examination, analyze data for appropriate diagnosis and treatment, initiate plans of care for inpatient and office consults in collaboration with the physician, and follow previously established plans of care for both oncology and hematology patients in both the outpatient and inpatient setting.
- Identify health hazards in the patient’s environment, as well as patient risk factors. Identify and consider the cultural patterns, economic status and patient resources in plan of care. Collaborate with social services, nurse navigation, and dietary services to provide holistic patient care.
- Provide routine follow‑up examinations and make recommendations for adjustments to plans of care, as appropriate.
- Refer patient to appropriate services when complexity exceeds the scope of practice of the practitioner.
- Provide pre‑treatment chemotherapy education to patients and their families in the office setting.
- Provide education to office staff as needed.
- Assist with preparation, administration, and supervision of chemotherapy as staff and physician coverage may require.
- Assist with office medical procedures as required.
- Provide first call coverage and assist with morning or evening hospital rounds as required. Serve as a point‑person for the oncology group in the inpatient setting.
- Collaborate with physician to formulate and review medical protocols.
- Monitor and ensure accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
- Document patient history of present illness, review of systems, physical assessment, and plan of care in the patient’s medical record based off of office visit findings.
