Employment Type:

Full-time.
Salary: $4,267 per month ($51,204 annually). Sign‑on bonus: $5,000 payable over 18 months.
Shift assignments are rotating and may include day, evening, or night.
Position becomes available September 2025, closed on June 29, 2026.

Education and Experience:

High‑school graduate or equivalent.

• Be willing to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Be a U.S. citizen.
• Have a good moral character as determined by investigation.
• Complete a criminal history disclosure form approved by the appointing authority.
• Agree to release all records involving criminal history to the appointing authority.
• Provide a fingerprint sample for a fingerprint‑based criminal history check.
• Have no conviction for a felony or have been discharged from any branch of the U.S. armed forces under non‑honorable conditions.
• Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician.
• Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional.
• Pass a pre‑employment drug screening test.
• Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of appointment in positions that require driving.
• Upon appointment, complete a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy.

The Correctional Officer 1 is responsible for correctional work of average difficulty and performs related duties as required. The position involves the custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates and may include any shift. Employees may be assigned to three different work shifts and various post assignments; preferences are considered but not guaranteed.

After a mandatory one‑year training period, a successful applicant will be reclassified to Correctional Officer
2. Inadequate performance during training may result in demotion or termination.

• Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas, and attend to the medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of inmates.
• Inspect and patrol the grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.
• Check in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
• Observe inmate behavior; counsel inmates and families about problems; evaluate inmate hygiene, attitudes toward employees and other inmates, and send evaluations to the counseling department.
• Attend staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.
• Prepare reports including daily logs, disciplinary reports, records of inmates' jobs and pay, daily inmate counts, and requisitions for office supplies.
• Operate and utilize equipment such as two‑way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and motor vehicles.
• Ensure the safety of residents by supervising daily activities.
• Break up fights or other potentially dangerous situations by persuasion or use of physical force.
• Carry out and explain existing policies and procedures to others.
