We’re looking for a Senior iOS Developer to join our mobile engineering pod model and help deliver high quality, scalable iOS experiences across TEGNA’s portfolio of media properties. In this role, you’ll act as a technical anchor within your pod, owning complex features end to end while partnering closely with product, design, backend, and QA peers.
You’ll contribute directly to app development while also helping guide technical decisions, improve platform consistency, and raise the bar for quality and delivery across the broader iOS organization.
This is a hybrid position based in Knoxville, TN, with regular in‑person collaboration alongside engineers across mobile, backend, streaming, and quality teams.
Responsibilities- Design, develop, test, and maintain complex iOS features using Swift, Swift
UI, and UIKit. - Act as a senior technical contributor within a cross‑functional pod, owning features from design through release.
- Provide day‑to‑day technical guidance and support to other developers within the pod, helping with design decisions, implementation approaches, and problem solving.
- Help coordinate technical work within the pod to ensure dependencies are clear and implementation approaches are aligned.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, backend engineers, and QA to shape solutions that balance user experience, performance, and maintainability.
- Help guide technical implementation decisions within the pod and align with broader iOS platform standards.
- Integrate RESTful APIs and collaborate with backend teams on API design and evolution.
- Ensure high code quality through thoughtful design, unit testing, code reviews, and adherence to platform best practices.
- Partner with QE resources to improve testability and support automation efforts across the iOS codebase.
- Contribute to CI and CD pipelines and support a reliable release process.
- Participate actively in sprint planning, estimation, retrospectives, and cross‑pod technical discussions.
- Support release readiness and post‑release monitoring by reviewing performance, crash, and analytics data and helping diagnose and resolve issues.
- Identify and help drive down technical debt while balancing delivery commitments.
- Mentor mid‑level developers through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance.
- This role provides technical leadership and mentorship but does not include formal people management or ownership of sprint or release decisions.
- 5+ years of professional iOS development experience on production, client‑facing applications.
- Strong expertise in Swift, Swift
UI, and UIKit, with the ability to navigate and evolve mixed UI stacks. - Experience building and maintaining modular, scalable iOS architectures.
- Strong understanding of asynchronous programming, networking, and REST‑based integrations.
- Experience debugging complex issues and optimizing app performance and stability.
- Familiarity with automated testing strategies and modern mobile build and release pipelines.
- Ability to work autonomously within a pod while collaborating effectively across teams.
- Clear communication skills and a strong sense of ownership.
- Experience with video playback, HLS streaming, or ad‑tech frameworks.
- Familiarity with feature flags, experimentation, and analytics tooling.
- Experience working in multi‑app or multi‑brand iOS environments.
- Prior experience contributing to shared platform libraries or frameworks.
- Contribution to iOS platform‑level improvements that impact multiple pods or applications.
