Role DescriptionThe Lead Accountant/Bookkeeper plays a key role in supporting KEA’s daily accounting operations, month-end processes, annual audit preparation, and special projects. This position ensures the accuracy, confidentiality, and integrity of financial data while providing excellent service to internal departments, vendors, and cooperative members.
Working under the direction of the Controller, the Lead Accountant/Bookkeeper contributes to the cooperative’s financial health through precise accounting practices, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to cooperative values.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain strict confidentiality of all accounting and customer service transactions.
- Support accurate recording, posting, and reporting of financial transactions.
- Ensure timely completion of all assigned accounting duties by effectively prioritizing tasks.
- Follow cybersecurity best practices and complete required training.
- Stay current on KEA policies, IBEW labor agreements, labor laws, IRS regulations, and RUS accounting standards.
- Reconcile bank accounts and support daily cash sheet transactions.
- Prepare daily bank balances and commercial paper transactions for review.
- Monitor actual-to-budget expenses prior to monthly general ledger close.
- Review journal entries for accuracy and compliance with RUS, GAAP, and KEA budget standards.
- Support recurring journal entries, adjustments, and overhead/distribution account processing.
- Reconcile subsidiary ledgers to the general ledger monthly.
- Assist with sales tax, payroll tax, and accounts payable tax documentation.
- Prepare, track, and collect miscellaneous receivables, including small claims processing when needed.
- Prepare audit materials as requested.
- Gather and submit year-end reports as required.
- Maintain electronic filing systems for accounting and payroll records.
- Assist with payroll and serve as backup for Accounts Payable/Payroll Clerk and Member Services Representatives.
- Assist with maintaining employee master files.
- Stay proficient in NISC software modules and apply updates to workflows.
- Maintain an up-to-date operations manual for position functions.
- Provide courteous, professional communication with coworkers, vendors, and cooperative members.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the cooperative’s operations.
- Four-year degree in a business-related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Four years of accounting or office experience preferred.
- Knowledge of governmental accounting standards preferred.
- Must complete the RUS Accounting Course within two years of hire.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and applications.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
- Familiarity with cooperative principles, capital credits, and utility operations is a plus.
- Valid Alaska driver’s license and insurability under KEA’s insurance policy.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, and communicate clearly in English.
