Job Summary

Under the direct supervision and close and frequent proximity of a certified teacher, the tutor advisor performs instructional support services. The tutor advisor should be prepared to work with students in need of academic intervention.

Responsibilities
  • Provide one‑on‑one tutoring when scheduled at a time a student would not receive instruction from a teacher.
  • Assist with classroom management, such as organizing instructional and other materials.
  • Compile and maintain accurate student records on attendance, testing results, student progress, and achievement.
  • Provide information, materials, and instructional support to classroom instructors.
  • Conduct parent involvement activities, including contacting parents/legal guardians by telephone, in writing, or home visits to encourage participation in the student’s formal education.
  • Coordinate parent/family school functions at the school site.
  • Attend meetings and parent conferences to provide information and facilitate communication between students/parents and instructors/school administration.
  • Provide support in a library or media center.
  • Provide instructional support services under the direct supervision of a teacher.
  • Provide additional support functions such as preparing items for the program newsletter, school announcements, bulletins, and assisting in organizing special events or guest speakers.
  • Conduct progress monitoring assessments and maintain accurate progress monitoring data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Bilingual Position (if applicable)
  • Conduct initial multiple assessments to determine bilingual eligibility and yearly assessments to determine English language acquisition and adequate yearly progress.
  • Serve as a recruiter, compile surveys, initiate contacts with eligible students or parents, and complete the initial Certificate of Eligibility.
Knowledge

Completed two years (48 semester credits) of study at an institution of higher education; or obtained an associate's degree, or met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal state or local assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness).

Skills (entry requirements)

Ability to maintain effective communication with students and staff and function effectively as a team member; ability to carry out and evaluate the achievement of students after the teacher prepares the lesson and plans the instructional support activities; ability to test, identify, and keep accurate records of new and existing students; demonstrate adequate instructional technology skills; experience and training working with children from diverse backgrounds in an instructional setting.

Requirements (entry)

Completed two years (48 semester credits) of study at an institution of higher education; or obtained an associate's degree, or met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal state or local assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness).

Physical Requirements

Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than for sedentary work and the worker stands and sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Highly Qualified Requirements

Applicants must be highly qualified by the end of the probationary period. Highly qualified means you have met the paraprofessional requirements as defined by No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

  • High school diploma or GED, AND
  • Two years of college (at least 48 semester hours); OR
  • Associate's (or higher) degree; OR
  • Pass the Para Pro Assessment and the Paraprofessional Standards Checklist.
