Requirements

• Applicants must be at least 18 years or older.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Background check.
• Online substitute training.
• In-person orientation.

• Support the mission of the Kodiak Island Borough School District.
• Carry out all directives from District Administration.
• Comply with all applicable laws, board policies, and administrative regulations of the district.
• Personally demonstrate and facilitate others in demonstrating respect for the individual and cultural characteristics of others.
• Work to maintain a learning environment in which all students are actively engaged and contributing members and which is conducive to learning for all students.
• Work to maintain a safe environment in accordance with school handbook and established emergency procedures.
• Other duties as assigned from time to time.
• A copy of transcripts and diploma are requested for proper substitute salary placement.

• FY27 Pay Rates – Substitute Preparedness (Hourly and Daily)
  • High school diploma or equivalent: $25.80/hr ($180.60 for 7 hrs) – $180.00/day
  • Two or more successful years of college: $26.92/hr ($188.44 for 7 hrs) – $190.00/day
  • Bachelor's degree or higher / Valid teaching certificate from out-of-state: $28.05/hr ($196.35 for 7 hrs) – $225.00/day
  • Valid Alaska teaching certificate: $33.66/hr ($235.62 for 7 hrs) – $250.00/day
  • Retired KIBSD teacher (with valid AK teaching certificate): $67.32/hr ($471.24 for 7 hrs) – $450.00/day
• Long‑Term Substitute Teacher Rate (20+ consecutive days)
  • Bachelor's degree & valid Alaska teaching certificate: $250.00/day (7 hrs)
  • Master's degree & valid Alaska teaching certificate: $300.00/day (7 hrs)
  • Retired KIBSD teacher (with valid AK teaching certificate): $468.00/day (7 hrs)

  • Substitute Cafeteria Specialist – $18.75/hr
  • Substitute Custodian I – $18.75/hr
  • Substitute Night Custodian – $18.75/hr
  • Substitute Food Service Helper – $17.92/hr
  • Substitute Nurse I – $36.12/hr ($41.53/day)
  • Substitute Nurse II – $41.37/hr
  • Substitute Secretary I – $18.75/hr
  • Substitute Secretary II – $20.46/hr

  • Substitute Supply Specialist I – $20.46/hr

• Additional Compensation
  • A 2‑hour call‑out fee is paid when a substitute arrives and the assignment is canceled or the sub returns before two hours have been completed.

• Long‑term assignments (>20 days) are scheduled in advance and may involve a long‑term substitute teaching contract if they extend to the last day of the school year.
• Daily rate is based on a seven‑hour teacher day.
