Position: NOAA Contract Security Guard

NOAA Contract Security Guard - Temporary Part-time

Reports to: Kodiak Land Patrol Supervisor

Department: Kodiak Operations/Land & Forestry

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Compensation: $22.15 hourly

Job Type: Temporary part-time

General Description

The purpose of this job within the organization is to perform a variety of routine and complex work to enforce security and protect the property, personnel, and resources of NOAA research vessels while in port, in compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines and policies. This position works under close general supervision according to established NOAA practices that determine how or when to complete tasks.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Ensure building occupants and visitors comply with posted rules and regulations. Discrepancies shall be immediately reported to the company or their respective officers.
  • Monitor and enforce the personal identification and visitor control system.
  • Perform facility patrols and facility checks in accordance with routes and schedules as directed.
  • Turn off unnecessary facility lights, lock, unlock, or open windows, doors, gates, and cabinets and enforce energy conservation procedures and other related duties.
  • Answer telephone calls and take messages.
  • Keep uniforms clean and professionally presentable.
  • Direct traffic, both vehicle and pedestrian, and control parking.
  • Detect and immediately report persons attempting to gain unauthorized access to the property.
  • Prevent, if possible, unusual incidents, and detect and report damages, accidents, fire hazards, and violations of security procedures.
  • Obtain professional assistance in accordance with procedures in the event of injury or illness to personnel or others within the building or on the grounds.
  • Staff the security office and monitor security cameras.
  • Prepare a written report at the end of each shift. Contractor shall be responsible for maintaining these records for the term of the contract.
  • Notify designated personnel in the event of an emergency condition.
  • When required, provide security guard coverage on a shift basis for 24/7 service.
  • Perform other administrative or miscellaneous light duties, with patrol or other assigned duties.
  • Ensure all information regarding this contract is kept in a reading file at the guard station and is maintained by the contractor. This file shall be read and signed by each security guard when first assigned to the position and monthly thereafter.
  • Provide completed and error-free daily security and incident reports. The contractor shall maintain a complete file of these reports.
  • Provide transportation for guards to and from site.
  • Implement annual random drug-testing program of 25% of the contractor’s employees. Test results shall be furnished to the company.
  • Comply with the requirements of the DoD Contract Security Specifications outlined in the DD Form 254.

  • Education and Experience

    Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have 1–2 years of prior security officer experience. A clear criminal record is required.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    A strong commitment to the well-being of others is necessary to be successful in this position. Must have the ability to work calmly and efficiently, particularly when under duress. A neat, professional appearance and the ability to work on your feet and navigate stairs for extended periods is necessary. Must be able to work a variety of shifts.

    Unavoidable Hazards

    Involves routine and frequent exposure to loud sounds, vibration, stairs, ramps, and inclement weather. May be exposed to fumes and hazardous materials when working with mechanical equipment and tools. May require use of PPE (personal protection equipment) such as earplugs, safety glasses, hard hats, reflective vests, supplied on site, and to know their proper usage and storage locations. Hazard situations to be aware of and protect yourself from at all times.

    Special Certifications and Licenses
    • Valid Alaska Driver's License.
    • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC card) (obtainable after hire)
