The City of Kodiak is recruiting for a full-time Heavy Fleet Mechanic in the Public Works Department. The Department is looking for an experienced team player who desires to be part of a progressive Public Works Department working hard to serve the needs of our community.

Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of specialized and journey level duties involved in performing minor and major repairs to and maintaining a variety of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems on light and heavy gasoline and diesel vehicles, emergency response vehicles/equipment, trucks, and equipment. The Heavy Fleet Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, overhauling, repairing, and adjusting engines, transmissions, and related vehicle systems and components;

services and performs preventive maintenance duties on a variety of vehicles and equipment; conducts safety inspections; and maintains a variety of records and reports.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains a variety of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems on light and heavy gasoline and diesel power vehicles, emergency response vehicles and equipment, trucks, and equipment.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, and locates mechanical difficulties on automobiles, trucks, and on a variety of maintenance and construction light and heavy equipment; determines extent of necessary repairs and estimates time and materials as needed.
  • Diagnoses, maintains, and repairs electrical system components, ignition systems, alternators, voltage regulators, starters, and batteries.
  • Diagnoses and repairs front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears, and chain drives.
  • Replaces or repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
  • Keeps engines tuned for efficient and dependable operation; repairs, replaces, and installs parts and components as necessary.
  • Repairs, adjusts, and replaces brake systems including wheel cylinders, master cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors, and hydraulic and air brakes.
  • Cleans, repairs and replaces fuel pumps, fuel lines, gauges and electrical wiring systems.
  • Performs front end repair; changes and balances tires.
  • Performs scheduled and emergency repairs and overhauls on pumps, compressors, valves, hydraulic cylinders, heat exchangers, and mobile and stationary hoisting equipment.
  • Performs oil spill prevention measures; inspects, maintains and repairs fuel transfer and storage equipment including tanks, valves, piping and spill response supplies; disposes of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
  • Test drives, commissions, and evaluates new equipment as assigned; conducts emergency repair work on vehicles and equipment in the field; transports equipment between locations as necessary.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance including changing oil and cleaning vehicles; performs safety inspections on all City vehicles and ensures all repairs have been completed.
  • Processes and prioritizes work orders; estimates time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisitions materials; maintains work, time, and material records.
  • Performs electrical and acetylene welding duties including brazing and soldering on machinery and heavy equipment; fabricates special equipment, tools, parts and structures as needed; performs fabrication of required components using CNC technology and software (e.g., using Torchmate or a similar software to design a new bumper and cutting out the components on a plasma table).
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs stationary diesel generating units including fuel tanks, transfer pumps, fuel and lube oil filtering and testing; performs startup of generators for emergency operations.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  • Maintains and repairs shop equipment; cleans and maintains cleanliness of assigned work areas and facilities; disposes of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
