The City of Kodiak Parks and Recreation Department is recruiting for full-time Maintenance Specialist
. The Department is looking for an experienced team player that has a desire to be a part of a progressive Parks and Recreation Department working hard to serve the needs of our community.

Under general supervision, this advanced journey level position is responsible for independently performing and leading a wide range of activities on City property, streets and right-of-ways, facilities, buildings, and structures that could include: performing routine and non-routine maintenance and repairs; ensuring the application of correct, safe, and effective work methods; lawn care maintenance and landscaping; scheduling work crews and arranging for necessary equipment and materials;

park and field maintenance; playground inspection and maintenance; ice rink operations and maintenance; snow removal and ice control; investigating and responding to public questions and concerns; and train and lead the work of assigned employees.

The Parks and Recreation Department provides a variety of services and programs to support and enrich the lives of the residents of Kodiak. The Maintenance Specialist is responsible for providing maintenance, repair, and construction services in a safe, efficient manner and is frequently required to make independent, sound judgements in projects affecting the public health and safety, and to work without direct supervision.

The Maintenance Specialist must perform these duties in a manner that reflects positively on the City and the Department.

Examples Of Essential Duties:
  • Performs a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction work on various City buildings, facilities, structures, cemeteries, systems and other managed facilities and property that can include carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, welding, electrical and painting; and maintains playgrounds, parks, trails, cemeteries and related grounds.
  • Prepares, inspects, and performs maintenance on all types of athletic fields and equipment for seasonal use, repairs bleachers, goals, fencing, trash barrels, tennis nets, benches and other equipment.
  • Responsible for workplace safety of assigned employees and utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed; and maintains a healthy and safe working environment.
  • Trains assigned employees in their areas of work including construction, maintenance, and repair methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Leads and participates in routinely and regularly mowing grass; trims and edges landscaping; maintains, trims, prunes, and removes trees, brush, and weeds along City right-of-ways; removes broken branches and fallen trees from streets, sidewalks, and drainage ditches; and prunes and cuts limbs and foliage hanging over roads and sidewalks.
  • Performs inspections, repairs and maintenance on playgrounds, park shelters, equipment, docks, decks, bridges, fences, buildings and related amenities to include carpentry, concrete or cement work, metal fabrication and welding, parts replacement, resurfacing, reconstruction, and painting.
  • Performs general maintenance duties inside and outside of buildings; paints inside and outside of buildings; cleans and maintains HVAC system and filters.
  • Performs a variety of routine electrical work including repairing and maintaining electrical cord plugs and outlets; checks and maintains lighting systems including troubleshooting issues as well as changing ballasts as necessary.
  • Operates a variety of construction and maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, excavators, dump trucks, forklifts, toolcat, Zamboni, snow plow, trailers, loaders, and compactors. Transports, loads and unloads equipment and material to/from work sites.
  • Conducts traffic control when working in traffic areas of the City; installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of maintenance or repair activities; directs and controls traffic around work sites.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power equipment including, but not limited to, picks, shovels, rakes, chain saws, edger, weed eaters, push and riding mowers, and field painters.
