Equipment Operator – Journey 1/2/Lead/Journey 3 (Kodiak, Alaska)

Only Alaska residents are eligible. The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Southcoast Region Highways and Aviation/M&O is hiring an Equipment Operator to keep Alaska moving.

• Journey 1: $29.96 / hour – overtime eligible
• Journey 2: $31.82 / hour – overtime eligible
• Journey 3 Lead: $33.96 / hour – overtime eligible

• Journey 1: Perform airport and highway maintenance at a state maintenance station that includes a rural Part 139 certified airport. Maintain highways, airports, seaplane floats, bridges, and docks in a safe, fully operable condition. Comply with FHWA, FAA, TSA, and state regulations. Use light duty equipment for maintenance; heavy equipment usage will be in a training capacity.
• Journey 2: Same as Journey 1 with expanded travel and operational duties across the state maintenance station.
• Journey 3 Lead: Same as Journey 1/2 with added leadership responsibilities for the crew and oversight of maintenance projects.

Work occurs in remote and urban locations, maintaining roads, bridges, airports, and public facilities in a state that is known for rugged terrain and seasonal extremes. The role requires adaptability, resourcefulness, and teamwork.

• Valid Alaska Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months for Journey 1 and at time of hire for Journeys 2 and 3 (including N‑Tanker endorsement for Journeys 2 and
  3).
• Experience operating heavy equipment and ground support vehicles.
• Knowledge of transportation principles, vehicle operation procedures, and problem‑solving skills.
• Sharp eye‑hand coordination for job‑related tasks.
• Must be a resident of Alaska (check residency definition).
• Background check and drug test compliance per DOT & PF policy; possession of a commercial driver’s license is mandatory.
• Arms and Ammunition Requirement: cannot have a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction (see federal definition).

Vacancies in this class are filled through union referral except for promotions and transfers. The position may involve travel to other stations during summer projects.
