WASTEWATER COLLECTION/MAINTENANCE WORKER
Position Summary
The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform operations and maintenance duties on the city wastewater collection and treatment system, including monitoring, operating, and maintaining equipment. Additionally, an employee in this class performs testing and sampling duties, including making equipment adjustments to maintain operational standards. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Lead Wastewater Maintenance Worker and/or Wastewater Superintendent.
The principal duties of this class are performed in a collection and treatment plant environment that may include working in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of power tools and equipment and exposure to hazardous and allergenic materials.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may vary by assignment):
- Inspects and maintains sewer lift stations, pumps, collection lines, manholes, equipment, and related facilities of the wastewater collection and treatment systems.
- Monitors operation of pumping systems, M system, blowers, screens and fine screens, disinfection, mixing, filtration, dewatering equipment, lagoons, irrigation and related treatment equipment and systems.
- Performs scheduled and emergency maintenance and repairs on all plant equipment.
- Monitors control panels, gauges, and meters to detect variations in operating conditions and hours of operation.
- Collects samples for testing of various plant processes.
- Operates a variety of hand tools and job-related power equipment.
- Operates job-related heavy equipment including, but not limited to dump trucks, sewer cleaning trucks, backhoes, and forklifts.
- Locates system connections and laterals for contractors and repair and maintenance functions.
- Performs general building maintenance and ground-keeping tasks such as cleaning, snow removal, landscaping, and related tasks.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Responds to on-call after duty hours in emergency situations.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, equipment, materials, tools, and standard practices for the operation and maintenance of wastewater collection and treatment systems.
- Wastewater sampling and testing procedures and standards.
- Equipment and tool operation and maintenance practices.
- Mechanical apparatus, electrical, pump, and pipe fitting methods and techniques.
- Operation of standard office equipment, including a personal computer and job-related software.
- Follow written and oral instructions.
- Learn and apply federal, state, City wastewater treatment standards.
- Learn and apply federal (OSHA) regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices and handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Perform mathematical calculations required for system operation.
- Read and interpret system technical and operational manuals and guidelines.
- Read and interpret meters, gauges, control panels, and testing and monitoring equipment.
- Operate manual and automated valve, pump, and control systems.
- Operate a motor vehicle.
- Operate heavy equipment, power equipment, hand tools, and specialized wastewater collection and treatment equipment.
- Operate standard office equipment, including a computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties.
- Learn and interpret test results, make visual inspections, and adjust processes accordingly.
- Prepare written reports and maintain system performance records.
- Communicate effectively and establish and maintain working relationships with other City employees, supervisors, and the public.
- High school diploma or GED equivalency is required; and
- One to two (1-2) years wastewater treatment or related experience is preferred; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Idaho driver's license is required.
- Must live within 30 minutes of the center of town:
- Must successfully complete a background investigation through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Experience with biological treatment processes is preferred.
- Experience with basic laboratory analysis methods and practices is preferred.
- Must obtain OIT (operator in training) within 1 year of hire.
- Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate with other employees and the public, and discern warning or emergency alarms, including vehicle backup warnings.
