Position: Auditor (School Finance)

The Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) Office currently has an opening for an Auditor (School Finance)! We’re a highly engaged, collaborative team of about 50 employees with an office located at the new Hill Farms State Office Building on Madison’s near west side. The WTCS Office is the administrative service agency of the WTCS Board, which is the coordinating and oversight body for Wisconsin’s 16 public, two-year technical colleges.

This position offers the ability to work remotely nearly 100% of the time, however, the employee should be available to report to the office periodically as needed.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for implementing and determining adherence to system-wide accounting, financial reporting and auditing requirements for the Wisconsin Technical Colleges. The position requires a comprehensive knowledge of governmental accounting, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) accounting as well as relevant Wisconsin Statutes and Federal Regulations. The position involves the design maintenance of integrated data systems and reports; performs analysis of data to evaluate operations and ensures compliance with federal and state regulations;

and provides assistance and training to accounting staff at the WTCS districts and Community Based Organizations (CBOs). This position is also involved with complex financial calculations and analyses to determine cost allocation amounts, state aid distributions and program and material fee levels. This position is responsible for the agency’s financial records for grants and contracts. In addition, this position manages fiscal and grant activities such financial reports and aid payment vouchers.

Salary Information

The classification of this position is Auditor (School Finance) which is in pay schedule/range 07-02. The starting pay for this position will be between $44.00 - $48.00 per hour based on qualifications. An additional hourly add-on of up to $1.00 may be available for holding a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit.

A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

WTCS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the selected applicant being able to provide documentation of eligibility to work in the United States.

A criminal background check will be performed on the selected applicant prior to an offer of employment.

Travel is required for up to 10% of this position’s duties.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting or commensurate experience in accounting and auditing
  • Experience using financial software to create fiscal reports, process fiscal transactions, prepare financial statements and federal grant reports, etc.
  • Experience preparing, reviewing and reconciling complex financial statements, reports and schedules in accordance to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)

In addition, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:

  • Experience using Excel tools for data analysis (creation and maintenance of formulas, use and maintenance of Excel link functions, creation of pivot tables, etc.)
  • Experience calculating or verifying grant and/or aid payments
  • Experience providing technical assistance to others in the interpretation of accounting or auditing policies or procedures
