WEAU is hiring a dynamic, deadline-driven Multimedia Journalist based in our La Crosse Bureau. This position is for a journalist who can operate independently, generate daily story ideas, and build the relationships needed to own coverage in the La Crosse area. You’ll produce accurate, viewer-focused reporting for our newscasts and digital platforms, with an emphasis on trust, transparency, and fairness.

Duties/Responsibilities (including but not limited to)
  • Enterprise, pitch and develop original story ideas focused on the La Crosse area and aligned with WEAU editorial priorities.
  • Report, shoot and edit videos for daily newscasts, digital platforms, and social media.
  • Write clear, accurate, engaging scripts for broadcast and digital in AP style.
  • Perform as a strong live reporter for breaking news and planned coverage.
  • Cultivate and maintain community contacts, including public safety, local government, schools, health care, and business leaders.
  • Track community conversation and emerging issues (online and off-line) to generate story ideas and stay ahead of competitors.
  • Conduct interviews, verify information, and follow ethical news gathering and newsroom standards.
  • Publish stories, video and updates to the website and social platforms with audience-first framing.
  • Collaborate with newsroom leaders and producers to ensure accuracy, context, and fairness.
  • Maintain and operate station equipment, including cameras, lighting, microphones, and editing tools.
  • Monitor scanners and respond quickly to breaking news, often working solo in the field.
  • Balance breaking news, daily coverage and longer-term enterprise reporting through strong organization and time management.
  • Produce newscasts as needed.

This role requires working in all weather conditions, carrying equipment, driving to assignments, and adapting quickly to breaking news. Evening, weekend, and holiday shifts may be required.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong writing, shooting, and editing skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently, make sound editorial decisions and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Comfortable with live reporting and on-camera presentation.
  • Strong news judgment and commitment to accuracy, verification, and ethics.
  • Proficiency with editing software.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
