The Learner Support and Transition Division provides a range of leveled academic interventions and support for students at Western Technical College. The Academic Intervention Faculty are integral to just-in-time student support embedded in classes (all modalities), targeted support outside of class hours, and co-teaching to collaborate for student success and model best practices. Intervention Faculty Specialists are equity-minded, relationship-based practitioners who deepen learning in a culturally responsive manner, help to increase academic achievement and retention of students in order to move them successfully to program completion.

Academic Intervention Faculty are important activators of the mission of Western, advocates of social justice, and a part of the solution to the achievement gap.

This STEM-focused role supports our Integrated Technology programs and involves teaching in both in-person and online modalities. Contract would be 3 terms (Fall, Spring and Summer).

Essential Functions

1. Maintain and uphold the College values of Learning, Excellence, Accountability, Diversity, Student Success, Teamwork, Integrity, and Respect. Regular attendance is required.

2. Complete all required College training and responsible for maintaining the skills necessary to complete the essential functions of the position as defined by the department.

3. Student Success is the cornerstone of Western's culture and the college may assign employees as needed to other areas or additional duties to foster this success.

4. Instruction
- Supporting Action/Task May Include:

  • Plan lessons and academic coaching sessions that align with competency-based learning that is contextualized to the student's career path and reflects knowledge of student strengths.
  • Teach via multiple modes of delivery. Scaffold and differentiate instruction so that all students can engage with the content from culturally relevant points of reference in a rigorous and thought-provoking manner.
  • Assist all students in learning content knowledge in support of the College Success Abilities.
  • Understand and incorporate a variety of teaching methods, assessments, and technologies that align with class objectives, course competencies, and program outcomes.
  • Use a variety of formative assessments to gauge student learning, adjust instruction, and provide timely feedback to students.
  • Collaborate with other programs, faculty, and teams to support learning.
  • Collaborate with all students and Western staff to retain students and assist them in being successful.

5. Classroom Management
- Supporting Action/Task May Include:

  • Use expertise in teaching and learning to identify students' areas of need through professional observation, student interview, and using other structured tools and specialized inventories.
  • Create individualized plans for students to maximize their learning based on cultural funds of knowledge, professional assessment, and the context of the program and courses the students will be taking.
