Assistant Superintendent – Street Department
Grow your career with us! The City of La Crosse is seeking to hire an Assistant Superintendent in the Street Department. The Street Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of streets, snow removal, and oversees the refuse and recycling program. The individual in this position will work with a dedicated team of employees whose actions improve the lives of the citizens of La Crosse daily.
The purpose of this position is to assist the Street Superintendent with daily department activities and direct department operations. Incumbent will schedule projects, prepare work orders, allocate personnel and equipment, and monitor work in progress. Responsible for assisting in personnel matters, directing snow removal, and responding to department inquiries. Starting salary for this exempt position ranges between $78,187.20 to $83,657.60 (80 hours bi-weekly), depending on candidate qualifications.
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent, three to five years of progressively responsible street maintenance/construction experience, or any combination of education and experience which provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. A valid motor vehicle operator's license required.

Purpose of PositionThe purpose of this position is to assist the Street Superintendent with daily department activities and direct department operations in the absence of the Street Superintendent. The work is performed under the direction of the Street Superintendent. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Assists in scheduling projects.
- Prepares work orders.
- Allocates personnel and equipment.
- Monitors work in progress and checks completed projects.
- Advises crews.
- Checks utility openings for compliance with job requirements.
- Takes personnel actions.
- Prepares job-related injury reports and investigates injuries.
- Participates in hiring department personnel.
- Approves vacation and other leave requests.
- Acts on employee problems.
- Provides orientation to new department employees.
- Directs snow removal and ice control.
- Receives and responds to inquiries, complaints and comments regarding department activities.
- Directs department activities in the absence of the Superintendent.
- Receives Highway Department related after hours calls and supervises staff called out for after hours.
- Provides supervision for Highway Department staff and MSC staff on weekend and nights on an as needed basis.
- Maintains confidentiality of all proprietary department information, and all personnel matters including medical information and collective bargaining matters.
- Maintains regular and predictable on-site attendance.
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members. Dispatches department personnel to work sites.
