Correctional Officer Responsibilities

  • Supervise and maintain custody of inmates by controlling conduct, conducting searches, inspecting living areas, maintaining surveillance, dispensing medication, providing escorts to court and meetings, regulating visitation, and coordinating intake and release.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment within the jail and related facilities.
  • Investigate illegal or criminal activities in all areas of the jail.
  • Collect bonds for State Patrol, County Deputies, City, and Village arrests.
  • Answer or properly refer all inquiries concerning inmates.
  • Provide testimony in court as required.
  • Write reports and maintain jail records and files as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • No felony convictions in any jurisdiction, unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed or a complete pardon has been granted.
Desired Qualifications
  • Preferred Jail Certified, though not required.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements
  • Appointment contingent upon successful completion of pre‑employment checks: criminal background check, pre‑employment physical examination, psychological examination, drug screening, and written examination.
  • Successful completion of Wisconsin Jail Recruit Training certification within one year of hire.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (desired).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of jail policies, procedures, and operations related to security, surveillance, inmate control, and disciplinary procedures.
  • Basic understanding of the criminal justice system, probation, and law enforcement.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws relevant to jail operations.
  • Knowledge of self‑defense, restraining, and conflict management techniques.
  • Knowledge of inmate processing and release procedures (classification, fingerprinting, trust accounting, visitation, intake screening).
  • Knowledge of jail recordkeeping and report requirements.
  • Computer proficiency with common software used in the Sheriff's Office.
  • Ability to apply jail principles and procedures to problem solving.
  • Ability to learn and implement booking, visitation, and release procedures in accordance with policies.
  • Ability to perform searches, inspections, and surveillance activities.
  • Ability to use self‑defensive techniques and physical force in accordance with policies.
  • Ability to update and maintain records, files, reports, and inmate accounts.
  • Judgment and discretion in dealing with inmate conflicts per laws and policies.
  • Ability to prepare and present narrative and numerical reports.
  • Basic first aid and CPR knowledge.
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment and respond to emergencies quickly.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and county personnel.
  • Availability to work assigned hours, including short‑notice shifts at any hour.
Language Skills
  • Clear oral and written communication with staff, supervisors, and the community.
  • Reading, interpreting, and communicating policies, procedures, and written instructions.
  • English spoken, written, and comprehension sufficient for effective communication.
Reasoning Ability
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Accurate, detail‑oriented work.
  • Maintain accurate and concise records and reports.
Mathematical Ability
  • Perform arithmetic computations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
Physical Requirements
  • Typical exertion of objects >100 pounds infrequently, and regular exertion of objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires sitting, standing, walking, speaking, hearing, using hands for keys and handling tasks, reaching, and occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or climbing.
  • Requires standard vision, including distance, close, and peripheral vision.
  • Vocal communication required for conveying instructions clearly, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing required to perceive spoken information at normal levels.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze written or computer data and observe surroundings.
Work Environment
  • Secured, controlled‑access jail facility.
  • Exposure to personal injury, violence, verbal abuse, fumes, odors, dust, gases, blood, bodily fluids, and contagious diseases.
  • Typically moderately noisy environment.
