Description
The City of La Crosse is accepting applications for a full-time Maintenance Worker to become an essential member of the Street Department team. The Street Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of streets, snow removal, and oversees the refuse and recycling program. The individual in this position will work with a dedicated team of employees whose actions improve the lives of the citizens of La Crosse daily.
The purpose of this position is to replace and maintain streets, and remove snow, within the City of La Crosse. Incumbents perform manual labor such as working on a concrete crew and/or asphalt crew and operate a variety of equipment used in street maintenance such as trucks, snow removal equipment and hand and power tools. The work is performed under the supervision of a lead worker or supervisor.
Selected candidate subject to participation in DOT regulated random drug and alcohol program. The starting wage for this non-exempt position is $24.07 per hour (80 hours bi-weekly).
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent, one to two years light equipment operating experience, or any combination of education and experience which provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. A valid class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with airbrake and tanker endorsement required or ability to successfully obtain commercial driver's license/endorsements within 60 days on the job.

Purpose of Position
The purpose of positions in this classification is to operate a variety of assigned maintenance equipment for maintenance of streets.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Incumbents perform manual labor and operate a variety of equipment used in street maintenance such as trucks, snow removal equipment and hand and power tools. The work is performed under the supervision of a lead worker or supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Operates trucks, compactors, snow removal equipment, weed trimmer, hand tools, power hand tools and other equipment used in street maintenance.
Loads and unloads equipment, tools and materials used for repairs and maintenance projects.
Assists with excavating work sites. Cleans work sites.
Assists with concrete construction, street paving projects and setting forms. Shovels materials and assists with finishing. Fills potholes and patches pavement. Erects barricades. Flags traffic.
Fuels equipment and vehicles. Cleans equipment and vehicles.
May respond to emergencies during non-working hours.
Maintains regular and predictable on-site attendance.
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this classification and may also be performed by other unit members.
Participates in safety training.
May direct a limited term employee doing the same or similar work.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
High school diploma or equivalent, one to two years light equipment operating experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. A valid class B commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsement required or ability to successfully obtain commercial driver's license within 30 days on the job in the position.
