Overview

Job Summary The Underground Foreman leads and supervises field crews performing underground utility installations, including trenching, conduit, vaults, service connections, and related work. This role plans daily activities, ensures work is completed safely and according to schedule, and coordinates with management and other trades to maintain project quality, productivity, and compliance with all safety standards. The ideal candidate is a seasoned field leader with strong communication skills, technical understanding, and commitment to safe, efficient operations.

Responsibilities
  • Crew Leadership &

    Experience:

    Lead and supervise underground crews performing dry and/or wet utility installations, including trenching, conduit, vaults, and service connections.
  • Daily Work Planning:
    Plan daily work activities, assign tasks, and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to schedule.
  • Blueprint Interpretation:
    Read and interpret blueprint drawings, utility plans, and specifications to guide field operations.
  • Project Coordination:
    Coordinate with Project Managers, Superintendents, inspectors, and other trades to maintain workflow and resolve field issues.
  • Safety Compliance:
    Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and jobsite procedures; conduct daily safety meetings and job hazard analyses.
  • Utility Awareness:
    Verify utility locates and enforce safe excavation practices around existing underground infrastructure.
  • Quality Control:
    Monitor quality of work to ensure installations meet project standards and local codes.
  • Production Tracking:
    Track labor, materials, and equipment usage; report daily production and job progress.
  • Equipment Operation:
    Operate equipment as needed, including backhoe, mini excavator, skid steer, loader, and telehandler (operator certification a plus).
  • Equipment Oversight:
    Perform or oversee equipment inspections and ensure proper maintenance reporting.
  • Training & Mentorship:
    Train and mentor crew members to promote skill development, safety awareness, and productivity.
  • Jobsite Organization:
    Maintain organized, clean jobsites and enforce proper material handling and storage.
  • Layout & Field Support:
    Assist with layout, grade checks, and field measurements as required.
  • Communication:
    Communicate schedule changes, site conditions, and resource needs to management promptly.
Education, Skills and Experience
  • 3+ years of experience leading underground utility crews and field operations.
  • OSHA 30 Certified is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and diverse environments, including confined spaces and heights.
  • Physical requirements include sitting, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and the use of hands and arms to operate the equipment.
  • Must have good vision, strong sense of balance and no fear of heights.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, blueprints, pipe bending, and industry NEC code.
  • Must possess problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Must be fluent in both the speaking and writing of English.
