Registered Nurse

Provide direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting. Deliver care that reflects initiative, flexibility, and responsibility indicative of professional expectations with minimal supervision. Determine priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. Communicate with physicians about changes in patient status, symptomatology, and results of diagnostic studies. Respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.

Demonstrate competency in the following areas:
Provide direct patient care, evaluate outcomes, consult with other specialists as required, and adjust nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care. Perform head-to-toe assessments on all patients and reassessments as per policy, including pediatric, geriatric, and general patient populations. Assess and reassess pain and pain management techniques utilized. Educate patients and families regarding pain management. Monitor the hemodynamic status of patients and correctly interpret the results.

Have knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identify dysrhythmias, and treat appropriately. Accurately assign triage categories. Perform and document an in-depth nursing history including chief complaint, health status, and other pertinent information with 100% completion rate, as evidenced by random audit. Maintain accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses, and assessment of changes. Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity.

Identify and address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and families. Function as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers. Have knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan, providing age-appropriate care to patients served. Interact professionally with patients and families and involve them in the formation of the plan of care.

Formulate teaching plans based on identified learning needs and evaluate the effectiveness of learning, including family in teaching as appropriate. Maintain current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and their clinical condition. Prepare, hang, monitor, and discontinue IV fluids. Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards. Assist in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment. Cooperate with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives and maintain good employee relations. Assist physicians with procedures in the emergency department. Assist in the orientation of new employees to the emergency department.

Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops. Demonstrate responsibility for ongoing education and professional practice. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. Assist the department director in implementing core measures. Professional Requirements:
Ensure that appearance and personal conduct are professional at all times. Maintain an excellent attendance record. Report to work on time and as scheduled. Wear appropriate clothing for job functions. Work towards maintaining good rapport and cooperative working relationships with physicians and staff. Complete annual educational requirements. Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

Meet regulatory requirements. Wear identification while on duty. Utilize computerized punch time system correctly. Attend annual review and department in-services as scheduled. Read and return staff meeting minutes. Comply with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Actively participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (QI) activities. Communicate the mission, vision, and values of the organization, as well as the annual Plan of Care/Service for the department.

Regulatory Requirements:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, preferably with at least six months previous experience in emergency department or acute care. Current Registered Nurse license. Current BLS certification. Current ACLS certification within one year of hire. Current PALS certification within one year of hire. Language

Skills:

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.
