Registered Nurse

Provide direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting. Demonstrate initiative, flexibility, and responsibility indicative of professional expectations with minimal supervision. Determine priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. Communicate with Emergency Department physicians about changes in patient status, symptomatology, and results of diagnostic studies. Respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.

Demonstrate competency in the following areas:
Provide direct patient care, evaluate outcomes, consult with other specialists as required, and adjust nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care. Perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy, including pediatric, geriatric, and general patient populations. Assess and reassess pain and pain management techniques utilized. Educate the patient and family regarding pain management.

Monitor hemodynamic status of patients and accurately interpret results. Have knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identify dysrhythmias, and treat appropriately. Accurately assign triage categories. Perform and document an in-depth nursing history, including chief complaint, health status, and other pertinent information with a 100% completion rate as evidenced by random audit. Maintain accurate and continued nursing documentation, including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses, and assessment of changes.

Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identify and address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and families. Function as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers. Have knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patient population served. Interpret data about patient status to identify each patient's age-specific needs and provide care accordingly.

Interact professionally with patients and families and involve them in the formation of the plan of care. Formulate a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluate the effectiveness of learning, including family in teaching when appropriate. Maintain current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and their clinical condition. Prepare, hang, monitor, and discontinue IV fluids.

Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Create a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards. Assist in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment. Cooperate with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives, maintaining good employee relations and interdepartmental goals.

Assist physicians with procedures in the Emergency Department. Aid in the orientation of new employees to the Emergency Department. Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops; show responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. Assist in implementing core measures. Professional Requirements:
