Equipment Operator

Overview

Equipment Operator position with the Texas Department of Transportation. The role involves operating a variety of heavy equipment to support roadway maintenance, emergency response, and construction activities. Duties include equipment operation and maintenance, traffic control assistance, preventive maintenance inspections, and support during emergencies and severe weather. A valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at the time of application. Commitment to safety, teamwork, and delivering quality service is essential.

• Operate and maintain a range of light and heavy equipment, including tractor-trailer haul trucks, motor graders, excavators, bulldozers, cranes, paving machines, and dump trucks.
• Perform preventive maintenance inspections and routine servicing; use and move equipment and attachments as needed.
• Relocate equipment on haul trailers, including loading, securing, and unloading in compliance with laws and standards.
• Assist with traffic control and perform road and bridge maintenance tasks as assigned during emergencies (floods, storms, accidents, hazardous material spills).
• Coordinate equipment operations for daily work assignments when required.
• Adhere to safety standards and official procedures; report unusual issues to supervision.

• Experience:
  
  1 year of maintenance and/or construction equipment operation. Full-time or prorated part-time experience acceptable. Related college education or technical training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
• Licenses and
  
  Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license (state vehicle operation).
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License for equipment operation at time of application.

• Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and codes.
• Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Prioritizing and organizing work; using hand and power tools and equipment.
• Operating light and heavy highway equipment.

• Subject to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, noise, and hazards from moving vehicles, machinery, and chemicals.
• Work may occur indoors and outdoors; ability to work in small or confined spaces and in narrow aisles.
• Physical ability to perform lifting (up to 50 lbs in some categories) and to perform various movements (bending, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, etc.).
• Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification to respond to emergencies (24/7 readiness).
• Pre-employment physical may be required; drug test may be administered for safety-sensitive positions with random testing as applicable.
