Summary

As a Business Analyst at Pen Checks, you will serve as the connective tissue between our business stakeholders and our agile product development teams. Operating in a BA/Product Owner capacity, you will translate business needs into well-defined user stories, manage and prioritize product backlogs, and partner with engineering, design, and QA to deliver software that solves real problems for our customers.

This is a hands‑on role for someone who thrives in iterative delivery environments and is energized by helping teams ship the right thing.

Responsibilities
  • Requirements Elicitation & Refinement: Partner with stakeholders, end users, and subject matter experts to elicit, analyze, and document business and functional requirements using techniques such as interviews, workshops, and process observation.
  • User Story Writing: Author clear, testable user stories with well‑defined acceptance criteria (e.g., Given/When/Then) that the development team can confidently estimate and deliver within a sprint.
  • Backlog Management: Maintain a healthy, prioritized product backlog in Jira (or equivalent). Groom and refine stories ahead of sprint planning so the team always has a ready, sized queue of work.
  • Product Owner Support: Work alongside (or as a delegate of) the Product Owner to make day‑to‑day priority and scope decisions, balancing business value, technical effort, and dependencies.
  • Process Mapping: Document current‑state (as‑is) and future‑state (to‑be) workflows using BPMN, swim‑lane diagrams, or similar techniques to clarify scope and surface gaps before development begins.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Translate technical concepts for business audiences and business needs for technical audiences. Keep stakeholders informed on progress, trade‑offs, and upcoming releases.
  • User Acceptance Testing (UAT): Coordinate UAT with business stakeholders, define test scenarios from acceptance criteria, triage defects with QA, and confirm that delivered features meet the intended outcomes.
  • Documentation: Maintain clear, accessible documentation of requirements, decisions, and product behavior in Confluence (or equivalent). Keep artifacts current as the product evolves.
  • Data Analysis & Product Performance: Investigate production issues and user‑reported bugs to identify root causes, conduct discovery research to validate problems and proposed solutions, and monitor product performance metrics to surface opportunities for improvement and inform backlog priorities.
  • Cross‑functional

    Collaboration:

Work closely with product managers, designers, developers, QA, and customer‑facing teams to ensure alignment between business objectives and delivered solutions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to retrospectives and process improvement conversations. Help the team get better at how it works, not just what it builds.
Requirements Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field – or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3–5 years of experience as a Business Analyst, Product Owner, or hybrid BA/PO on an agile software delivery team.
  • Prior experience in Fin Tech, financial services, retirement plan administration, or the Record Keeper space (e.g., FIS Relius/Omni, Ascensus, SS&C).
  • Demonstrated experience writing user stories and acceptance criteria, and managing a product backlog through multiple release cycles.
  • Working knowledge of Agile frameworks (Scrum and/or Kanban) and the role of the BA/PO within them.
  • Hands‑on experience with backlog and collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence (or equivalents like Azure Dev Ops, Rally, or Trello).
  • Strong requirements elicitation, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to lead working sessions with mixed technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Excellent written and…
