Description
Approximately 20–30 hours per week (summer season).
Approximately 0–20 hours per week (non‑summer season).
Under general supervision, provides support to the Community Services Department in various programs, projects, and functions.
- Assist with a wide variety of activities for children, adults, and seniors including after‑school programs, sports, day camps, tournaments, games, and special events.
- Assist in organizing, officiating, and instructing children and adult activities, and teach the fundamentals of play and sportsmanship in recreational and sports activities.
- Assist in maintaining and cleaning City facilities.
- Set up facilities for sports leagues, classes, reservations, and special events.
- Assist in answering telephones and taking messages, attending the public counter, greeting the public, answering inquiries, class registrations, collecting fees, issuing receipts, and responding to emergency situations, including administering first aid.
- Attend staff meetings, trainings, and workshops.
- Adhere to City and departmental policies and procedures; perform related work duties as assigned.
- Must possess excellent customer service skills.
- Must be at least 16 years of age at the time of applying.
- Knowledge of methods, practices, and equipment used in maintaining an effective recreational program; CPR, AED, and First Aid safety practices;
English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and composition. - Ability to read, understand, and carry out written and oral directions; be a source of accurate information; follow room or facility set‑up guidelines; perform basic math functions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, community groups, staff, and other agencies; lift up to 50 lbs.; work varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Prior recreation or education experience is desirable.
License or CertificatePossession of CPR, AED, and First Aid certificates is required within the first month of employment. Certification will be provided by the City.

Selection ProcessA completed online application and supplemental questionnaire (if applicable) are required to be considered for this position. Applications evaluated as best matching the needs of the City will continue in the selection process.
The selection process may include any or all of the following: oral interview(s), a written or practical examination, a skills test, and an assessment center examination. Candidates will be required to pass City‑administered pre‑employment requirements to include live‑scan fingerprinting and a medical examination as part of the selection process. Candidates who do not pass any portion of the above processes will be disqualified and removed from proceeding in the selection process.
The City of La Mirada offers a competitive compensation and benefits package based on the adopted Salary and Benefits Resolution. Appointments are normally made at the first step of a five‑step salary range. One year of City service is required to advance to the next pay step in the salary range.
