Art Studio Manager, Department of Art and Design Position Description

The Art Studio Manager is responsible for the smooth running and safe operation of studios and major equipment in the Department of Art and Design. The Art Studio Manager reports to the Department Chair.

The person who fills this position must be someone who personally agrees with Biola’s Articles of Faith and Statement of Biblical Principles and who is supportive of the positions taken by Biola as contained in its Eschatology Teaching Position. As such, this person may not speak against or act in a manner inconsistent with these positions during the course of their employment at Biola.

Department of Art and Design

This position reports to the Chair, Department of Art and Design.

BFA/BA/BS degree in studio art, or equivalent degree is highly preferred.

• Non-exempt (02), full-time – 30 hours/week, 11 months per year (However, there is potential for an increase in weekly hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week on occasion, for candidates who have expertise in professional gallery installation).
• This position requires personal attendance at Biola’s campus in La Mirada, California.

• General supervision, maintenance, and improvement of Visual Art studios in Bardwell Hall and the 3-D (woodshop, sculpture, and ceramics) areas.
• Recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervision of 7-10 student workers throughout the department (Woodshop, Ceramics, Photography, Design, Animation, Gallery, Art Studio) each semester.
• Providing safety certification training to students on the use of equipment in the woodshop each semester.
• Supporting the safe use and disposal of hazardous materials throughout the department.
• Coordinating with faculty, School budget personnel, and University Purchasing to ensure proper equipment maintenance and rotation.
• Supporting faculty and students in exhibition transitions in the Bardwell Project Space and the Green Art Gallery.
• Liaise with vendors who provide supplemental support to the department’s technologies and equipment.
• Coordinate facilities upgrades and repairs with University Facilities Services Personnel.
• Liaise with Information Technology to facilitate the proper functioning of technology throughout the department.
• Maintain inventories of equipment, supplies, and technologies. Order supplies regularly to adequately support the various studios.
• Maintain the google drive documents and spreadsheets corresponding to the responsibilities of this position.
• Represent the Department of Art and Design, as well as Biola, with integrity when interfacing with students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors.
• Uphold Christ-like standards in word and action in the pursuit of providing safe spaces for all.

• Participate in facilities planning and renovation projects.
• Support departmental accreditation reporting (facilities and equipment) with the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

• Demonstrate proficiency in the use and upkeep of hand tools and power tool equipment.
• Demonstrate proficiency in woodworking, carpentry, and general construction skills.
• Be able to organize and maintain a healthy and safe environment in various art-making spaces.
• Be able to uphold professionalism in effectively training, working with, and supervising student workers.
• Be able to upkeep spreadsheets in an organized and legible fashion.
• Demonstrate competency in the general supervision of other art studio labs.
• Effectively supervise and assign tasks to student workers across several studio areas.
• Have the ability to stand for 3 hours at a time.
• Be able to lift or move 50 to 75 lbs of materials/equipment. He/she will be carrying large materials and equipment regularly.
• Be able to lift and reach overhead for placing equipment on shelves. Must also be able to bend.
• Be able to practice active listening to understand others’ needs and respond effectively.
• Identifying issues and coming up with practical solutions.
• Be able to communicate effectively in a collegial manner with students, faculty, and staff.

• Experience in professional gallery installation work.
• Knowledge of film photography and darkroom maintenance.
• Knowledge of computer technologies.
• Proficiency with Adobe CC Suite software.
• Digital fabrication skills, including 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing, and other digitally-based fabrication tools.

Hiring Range: $24.33 - 27.56 per hour
