Junior Instructional Designer Position Description
The Instructional Designer I (ID1) functions as a collaborative member of the instructional design () team in the construction and maintenance of learner-centered online and hybrid classes. Working closely with the and faculty, the ID1 will assist in the construction of new classes and update older classes to meet current design standards. These contributions will increase the scope and quality of Biola’s online offerings and will advance the university’s mission of Christ-centered education for the common good.

The person who fills this position must be someone who personally agrees with Biola’s Articles of Faith and Statement of Biblical Principles and who is supportive of the positions taken by Biola as contained in its Eschatology Teaching Position. As such, this person may not speak against or act in a manner inconsistent with these positions during the course of their employment at Biola.

Educational Requirements- An accredited bachelor’s degree
- Enrollment (or demonstrable interest in enrollment) in an accredited master’s program in education or instructional design (Preferred)
- Non-exempt (02), full-time - 40 hours/week, 12 months per year
- This position requires personal attendance at Biola’s campus in La Mirada, California, but will consider a limited hybrid/flexible work arrangement
- Crafting ( approx. 70% of weekly hours) – Update existing online classes to align with the course template, office style guide, and current guidelines on learner-centered approaches in online pedagogy
- Review course content revisions by the Instructional Design Assistant (IDA)
- Evaluate assessment strategies to ensure that assignments in each course require learners to achieve defined, measurable objectives
- Ensure that each assignment has instructions that are clear and well-organized, including rubrics for discussions and major assignments
- Evaluate all videos, text, and images in online courses for compliance with accessibility regulations
- Consulting (approx. 15% of weekly hours) – Collaborate with the in the design, construction, and maintenance of online classes and programs
- Communicate with faculty to construct online and hybrid classes that meet Biola’s quality standards
- Professional Development (approx. 15% of weekly hours) – Engage in research and attend conferences as advised by the Director
- Participate in a formal course or program of study relevant to the field of instructional design
- Some experience in online curriculum development and writing
- Familiarity with pedagogical theories and approaches to online education appropriate for varying student learning needs, and preparedness to continue learning about design developments
- Proficiency with
- Canvas Learning Management System (Preferred)
- Google Suite (Preferred)
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Working knowledge of
- HTML and web page design (Preferred)
- Adobe Creative Suite
- Air Table or other Project Management applications
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Attention to detail, quality, consistency, and creativity while working on multiple tasks
- Knowledge of accessibility standards appropriate for online and hybrid education (Preferred)
- Ability to learn new technology quickly and apply as appropriate (Preferred)
- Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS)
- Working knowledge of basic HTML (Preferred)
- Demonstrated effectiveness in collaborating on a diverse team
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Strong organizational, self-management, problem-solving, and creative skills
Hiring Range: $22.40 - 25.00 per hour
