The Double Backer Operator is responsible for operating and monitoring the double backer section of the corrugator to produce high-quality corrugated sheets that meet customer specifications and production standards. This position ensures proper bonding, moisture control, board quality, and production efficiency by making process adjustments, monitoring equipment performance, and collaborating with other corrugator team members. The Double Backer Operator plays a critical role in maximizing machine performance while maintaining a safe work environment and minimizing waste and downtime.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operate and monitor the double backer section of the corrugator in accordance with production schedules and quality standards.
- Set up and adjust machine settings, including temperature, pressure, belt speed, and steam controls, to achieve optimal board quality and production efficiency.
- Monitor product quality throughout production, ensuring proper adhesive bond, board caliper, moisture content, warp, and overall product integrity.
- Identify and correct quality or process issues by making appropriate machine adjustments.
- Coordinate with the Single Facer Operator, Dry End Operator, and Corrugator Supervisor to maintain continuous production flow.
- Perform product changeovers efficiently while minimizing downtime and material waste.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and process-related issues and communicate equipment concerns to Maintenance when necessary.
- Perform routine inspections and assist with preventative maintenance activities.
- Accurately complete production reports, quality checks, and operational documentation.
- Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure the work area remains clean, organized, and free of safety hazards.
- Follow all company safety policies, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, and required PPE procedures.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, and waste reduction.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of manufacturing experience preferred.
- Previous corrugator experience required.
- Experience operating a Double Backer or similar corrugated converting equipment strongly preferred.
- Experience troubleshooting production and quality issues in a manufacturing environment preferred.
- Working knowledge of corrugator operations and the corrugated manufacturing process.
- Understanding of board quality characteristics, including adhesive bond, moisture control, warp, caliper, and sheet quality.
- Ability to operate production equipment safely and efficiently in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and interpret production orders, specifications, and quality requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality products.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to prioritize work and adapt to changing production demands.
- Commitment to workplace safety and compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during a 10–12 hour shift.
- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, twist, push, and pull.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks while working around moving mechanical equipment.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to heat, noise, dust, vibration, and varying temperatures.
- Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toe footwear.
