Driver Education Instructor

The individual in this position represents the College of Southern Maryland and the Transportation Department through Driver Education Orientations, Classroom Instruction, and Behind the Wheel Instruction, virtually and on college campuses.

The instructor instructs and prepares students for the Maryland Graduated Licensing System and Maryland Law through classroom and behind the wheel instruction.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

60% Instruction

  • Instructs in the classroom and/or virtually via the Zoom application the Maryland Standardized Curriculum as prepared and enforced by the Motor Vehicle Administration and Maryland Laws.
  • Instructs in CSM's Certified Driver Education Vehicles the Maryland Standardized Curriculum for Behind-the-Wheel instruction as prepared and enforced by the Motor Vehicle Administration and Maryland Laws.
  • Conducts Driver Education Orientations.
  • Interfaces regularly with parents and students to ensure driver safety compliance and satisfaction with the training experience.
  • Evaluates student progress and makes decisions regarding student preparedness to perform skills.
  • Teaches the Driver Improvement Program.
  • Demonstrates equipment operations to first-time drivers.
  • Conducts additional behind-the-wheel driving sessions as scheduled or required to meet curriculum objectives.
  • Conducts any requested oral test for Driver Education students.
  • Conducts retests as necessary for Driver Education students as required by COMAR.
  • Take students to the MVA for skills test appointments as scheduled.
  • Ensures there is a smooth transition between Driver Education classroom and behind-the-wheel training for students, parents, and instructors.

20% Administration and Compliance

  • Completes all required paperwork mandated for Certified Driver Education Instructors, including classroom and behind-the-wheel completion sheets, grade sheets, activity sheets, attendance records, and CSM documentation.
  • Enters all completed students into the MVA database and verifies submissions with the Driver Education Manager.
  • Enter student grades and completion information into Lumens.
  • Follows FERPA guidelines in securing student files and personal information.
  • Monitors and maintains student grade and attendance reports; proactively reports critical absences to the program manager.
  • Updates daily behind-the-wheel student completion hours in the MDOT MVA database.
  • During inclement weather situations, monitors the college hotline and coordinates student notifications, cancellations, and rescheduling efforts.
  • Contact the Transportation Program Manager regarding incidents, injuries, or other urgent issues.
  • Supervises part-time adjunct instructors in the Driver Education program.
  • Assists Transportation Program Manager with training and supervision of new staff and supports staff development as assigned.
  • Completes required MVA documentation for staff in training and/or observation status.
  • Maintains office hours, responds to emails, and returns calls designated for the Driver Education Instructor and supervisor.
