Candidates applying for this position will be required to attend a mandatory 10-week Academy.
This job announcement is for applicants applying for Full-time and/or Part-time.

This position may require working an alternative schedule, which could include either:
Two (2) 12-hour day shifts followed by two (2) days off on a repeating cycle; or One (1) 24-hour shift followed by three (3) days off.
Please note:
The starting salary listed in this announcement reflects the current C Scale. Candidates who are hired will begin on the E Scale until they successfully complete the EMS Academy.
Applications for the EMT-I eligibility list must attach the following certifications to the application to qualify. Applications that do not include certifications will not move forward in the process.
- High school diploma or GED
- Current and valid Maryland EMT-Basic card. National cards are accepted, but candidates must obtain a Maryland EMT-Basic card prior to the completion of academy –
must provide a copy of the physical card. - BLS (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) –
must provide a copy of certification - If applicable, valid US Armed Service veteran – include honorable military service information in the Employment History section of the application and include a copy of DD‑214.
Candidates who complete the application & attach copies of their certifications successfully, will be invited to take the written exam (dates TBD). There are no make-up dates for the written exam. Qualified applicants will be notified if they are eligible to take the written exam. In preparation for taking the exam, you can visit for exam preparation materials. This counts for 30% of your final score.
Those who successfully pass the written exam will be invited to take the physical agility test (PAT). Eligible candidates will be notified of the available dates, times, and location. If you have successfully completed the PAT with another jurisdiction within the last year, please attach your certification to your application. This test is pass or fail.
Candidates who successfully pass the physical agility test (PAT) will sit before a panel to complete a Skills/Oral exam, available dates, times and location will be provided. This counts for 30% of your final score. Below are links that will beneficial in helping you prepare for the exam;

Once the Skills/Oral exam is successfully completed, those that passed will sit for a panel interview, available dates, times and location will be provided. This counts for 40% of your final score.
Once the interview process has concluded, your cumulative scores from each step in the process will determine your final score, which will then determine if you’ve made it on to the eligibility list. Once the eligibility list is finalized, you will receive an email with your placement on the list and the next steps. The eligibility list is good for 1 year and as positions become vacant, you will be updated on your placement on the list.
Please note:
This position requires the use of respirators for respiratory protection. Charles County follows OSHA 29 CFR (Respiratory Protection) Standard. Charles County does not permit respirators with tight-fitting face pieces to be worn by employees who have facial hair that comes between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the face or that interferes with valve function (g)(1)(i)(A). No exemptions or waivers will be issued by the County Safety Office.
