Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance Technician

Charles County Government is seeking a dynamic Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance Technician to diagnose, adjust, repair, overhaul, and maintain County gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles and equipment in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations. Technician will address and resolve repair orders in a safe, efficient, and quality manner, with a strong focus on customer service.

Essential Job Functions

The technician will:

  • Adjusts, repairs, overhauls, and maintains vehicles and equipment such as sedans; sports utility vehicles; vans; light, medium, and heavy duty, or specialized trucks; trailers; and backhoes, excavators, skid loaders and related attachments.
  • Reviews repair orders or instructions to determine work activities. Identifies materials and tools required and estimate time needed to complete the work.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic equipment, test drives, visual observation, or other specialized skills and tools to inspect and identify problems, troubleshoot or recreate situations, and verify customer complaints before work is initiated.
  • Diagnoses the cause and related symptoms of any malfunction. Reviews vehicle and equipment files to determine whether parts, accessories, vehicle, or equipment are covered by manufacturer or vendor warranty.
  • Applies deductive and inductive reasoning and the use of checklists, technical manuals, and experience to estimate and compare the short-term and long-term costs and benefits of potential solutions.
  • Evaluates strengths and weaknesses of options, determines the best solution, and plans the appropriate work procedures. Consults with coworkers, customers, and vendors to coordinate and execute work activities.
  • Installs parts and accessories or performs repairs in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Fabricates and welds parts as needed to repair cracks or damage.
  • Understands and reviews the implications of new information related to a solution for both current and future problem solving and decision making. Monitors and controls financial and personnel resources to assure costs do not exceed benefits.
  • Conducts quality control and assurance procedures to confirm the repair is complete and the vehicle or equipment operates safely and reliably.
  • Performs mandatory inspections and preventive maintenance to maximize the safety, productivity, and life of the vehicle or equipment. Examines the vehicle or equipment to determine if additional safety or repair work is required and make appropriate notations of recommended repairs.
  • Mounts and removes, maintains, and repairs snow removal equipment to include, but not limited to, snowplows and salt spreaders.
  • Responds to roadside or offsite emergencies, transporting any needed tools and parts, and assess the feasibility of performing the repair. Tows or arranges for towing if the vehicle or equipment cannot be repaired or operate safely.
  • Provides emergency or relief assistance to Technicians that repair and maintain small engine equipment to include, but not limited to, chainsaws, lawnmowers, tractors, trimmers, leaf blowers, and generators as and when needed.
  • Documents work performed in a clear, detailed but concise, and timely manner.
  • Maintains the safety and cleanliness of the work area, as well as safeguarding assets to include vehicles, equipment, tools, and parts.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED). Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess a valid drivers license and able to obtain a Class B CDL within one year of hire.

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification or industry equivalent.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Section 609 Technician Certification or able to obtain within six months of hire.

Forklift Certification or able to obtain within six months of hire.

THIS IS A CDL POSITION, AND EMPLOYEES IN THIS POSITION ARE SUBJECT TO RANDOM DRUG AND ALCOHOL SCREENING.

Subject to work beyond the normal scheduled hours of work.

Subject to call back in emergencies.

Work is subject to frequent interruptions.

Employee is required to execute all duties with ethics and integrity and must take the appropriate measures to safeguard assets to include vehicles, equipment, and tools. Employee may need to attend training to obtain or improve knowledge and develop or update specific skills.
