Job Title

Perform skilled work in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC control systems, including pneumatic and direct digital controls (DDC). Supports the efficient operation of hydronic systems, geothermal loops, and a range of HVAC equipment such as VRF systems, rooftop units, and VAV boxes. Ensures optimal system performance by diagnosing faults, replacing components, and maintaining reliable building climate control across CCPS facilities.

Salary Scale: AFSCME UB, Grade 14-15

Salary Range: $57,824 to $92,136, with placement in the range determined by verified years of relevant experience.

Job Summary

Performs skilled work in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC control systems, including pneumatic and direct digital controls (DDC). Supports the efficient operation of hydronic systems, geothermal loops, and a range of HVAC equipment such as VRF systems, rooftop units, and VAV boxes. Ensures optimal system performance by diagnosing faults, replacing components, and maintaining reliable building climate control across CCPS facilities.

Education

and Work Experience

Education:

High school diploma or GED required; vocational training or coursework in HVAC, electrical systems, or building automation preferred.

Experience:

Minimum five (5) years of experience in HVAC systems maintenance and control system diagnostics.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • EPA Certification required.
  • Willingness to complete additional training as required.
Essential Job Functions

Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs HVAC control systems including pneumatic and DDC systems.

Services and oversees hydronic systems, boilers, and geothermal heat pump loops.

Installs, calibrates, and repairs components within VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) systems, rooftop units, air handlers, and VAV (Variable Air Volume) boxes.

Replaces and repairs motors, circulating pumps, valves, and other control components.

Utilizes wiring diagrams, schematics, and component breakdowns to trace electrical faults and determine repair strategies.

Applies basic to intermediate programming knowledge to interface with and modify control systems.

Conducts routine and preventive maintenance inspections to ensure optimal system performance.

Collaborates with other trades and contractors on system upgrades and building renovations.

Ensures all work meets applicable codes, safety standards, and operational performance criteria.

Maintains records of service work, inspections, and replacements using computerized maintenance systems.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of HVAC systems, including DDC and pneumatic controls, electrical theory, component operation sequences, and modern building automation.

Knowledge of system integration, VRF technology, geothermal systems, and energy management strategies.

Skill in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of control systems and mechanical components.

Skill in reading schematics, wiring diagrams, and interpreting technical manuals.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively to resolve complex issues efficiently.

Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation using computerized systems.

Ability to deliver excellent customer service and coordinate with diverse teams.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights (10–50 pounds).

Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, fine motor skills, and visual acuity for diagnostics and repairs.

Frequently required to work at heights, in mechanical rooms, and in confined or outdoor spaces.

Exposed to HVAC equipment noise, vibration, and moderate levels of environmental discomfort.
