Overview

Senior Area Electrical Engineer

Location:

La Porte, IN. This role supports a portfolio of industrial production facilities including air separation, hydrogen, CO?, helium, and on-site customer plants. Provides subject-matter expertise for electrical infrastructure, power distribution, and electrical reliability across multiple operating sites. This is a highly visible role supporting operations, maintenance strategy, major capital projects, and electrical safety across 13 plants at 11 locations. The successful candidate will act as an owner’s representative, ensuring electrical systems are safe, reliable, and optimized for performance.

Salary: $150,000–$170,000/year DOE + 10–20% bonus
Relocation: Yes (3rd-party relocation support)
Company Vehicle: Yes
Work Schedule: Hybrid (3 days per week onsite)
Travel: 25–40% across multiple plant locations

Required

Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 10+ years of electrical engineering experience supporting industrial operations
  • Strong background in high voltage electrical systems and power distribution
  • Experience supporting substations, switch gear, transformers, MCCs, VFDs, and large motors
  • Knowledge of:
    • NEC / NFPA 70
    • NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety)
    • NETA Maintenance Testing Specifications
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex electrical systems and restore plant operations
  • Ability to work independently across multiple sites in a matrixed organization
  • Strong communication and leadership-by-influence skills
  • Willingness to travel 25–40%
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting chemical, refining, steel, industrial gas, or energy facilities
  • Expertise with large motors up to 35,000 HP
  • Experience with relay protection, coordination studies, and power quality analysis
  • Familiarity with hazardous area classification and lightning protection systems
  • Experience acting as an owner’s representative over contractors and vendors
Key Responsibilities
  • Electrical Infrastructure Support
    • Provide technical, troubleshooting, and maintenance support for electrical systems across industrial production facilities
    • Support:
      • 138kV substations
      • High / Medium / Low voltage switch gear
      • MCCs
      • VFDs
      • UPS and battery systems
      • DCS and PLC interfaces
      • Large motors and excitation controls
  • Maintenance & Reliability Strategy
    • Develop electrical major maintenance scopes, budgets, and execution strategies
    • Identify and assess condition-based monitoring (CBM) tools such as infrared, ultrasonic, vibration, and signature analysis
    • Review reliability data and drive corrective actions
  • Engineering & Change Management
    • Review and approve electrical changes through Management of Change (MOC) processes
    • Ensure accurate documentation and compliance with engineering standards
    • Create and review electrical PMs, work instructions, and procedures
  • Field Support & Commissioning
    • Support major maintenance, upgrades, and new plant startups
    • Perform loop checks and functional testing prior to startup
    • Support plant restarts and troubleshooting activities
  • Project Execution Support
    • Provide electrical scope development, estimates, and technical documentation for capital improvement and re-life projects
    • Support project execution teams for major installations and upgrades
  • Contractor & Safety Oversight
    • Supervise and assess electrical contractors for scope, quality, and compliance
    • Train and support plant personnel on NFPA 70E electrical safety
    • Perform electrical safety training at site locations
