Overview

Reports to the Laboratory Manager (BMG). Examines and tests human specimens to obtain information for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients. Maintains daily patient log and enters test results on forms, properly logging all blood and urine samples. Maintains equipment, keeps inventory and orders supplies, and maintains cleanliness of the laboratory using OSHA guidelines.

Analysis/Testing Responsibilities
  • Examines and tests human specimens to obtain information for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients.
  • Receives and collects specimens for laboratory testing including drawing blood, collecting urine and other body materials and fluids from patients.
  • Performs blood analysis in chemistry, hematology, immunology, and general lab as ordered by physicians.
  • Performs and interprets wet mounts, urinalysis, post‑vas and other tests as ordered on other body fluids.
  • Notifies physicians of critical lab values.
  • Prepares paperwork, computer orders and specimens for referral labs.
Reporting Functions
  • Maintains daily patient logs and enters test results on forms or in computer, properly logging all human specimen samples.
  • Maintains file of standing lab and future lab orders for patients; keeps records for two years.
  • Keeps quality control and maintenance records up to date, adhering to the laboratory's quality control policies and documenting all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Keeps lab manual up to date.
  • Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the lab's established performance specifications.
Operational Support
  • Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment following the laboratory's established corrective action, policies, and procedures when test systems are not within acceptable levels of performance.
  • Keeps inventory and orders laboratory supplies.
  • Maintains cleanliness of laboratory, cleaning spills with special attention to body fluid precautions and contaminated waste disposal per OSHA guidelines.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, correcting the problem or immediately notifying the technical consultant, clinical consultant or director.
  • Attending required meetings and participating on committees as requested.
  • Performs other job-related assignments and special projects as assigned.
  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the department.
Organizational Responsibilities
  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, and department specific education within established time frames.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established time frames.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.
