WATER

DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM OPERATOR LEVEL 1 -$21.01 P/H

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION. The Water Distribution System Operator Level 1 for the City of La Porte Water Department is responsible for performing manual work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water distribution system or related utility functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled heavy manual work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water distribution system or related utility functions.

Responds to emergencies related to maintaining water service including manual and mechanically digging holes, trenches, and opening manhole covers.

Reports necessary information needed for maintaining and updating records of existing water lines and responds to customer requests for water line locations.

Installs, removes, relocates, and repairs large and small water services and connections such as hot taps, curb stops, ball valves, meters, and meter boxes.

Performs excavation work, installs shoring, sets and fits pipelines, measures and cuts street and lays asphalt and pavement. Cuts, fits, lays, land repairs water mains, cleans and flushes water mains and reservoirs as needed.

Inspects, repairs, and maintains fire hydrants, exercises valves throughout the water system.

Chlorinates pipelines, and tests hydraulic systems. Performs chlorine and bacteria tests for the entire water system.

Performs backwashing for filtration plants.

Performs pressure tests and logs information.

Operates heavy and light equipment including dump truck, forklift, backhoe, loaders, pallet jack, pressure washer, and concrete saws. Cleans, greases and oils mechanical equipment and tools.

Operates hand and/or power tools hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, air nozzle, air compressor, driver, ratchet, files, mop, broom, gauge, shovel, and diamond tip saw.

Works service counter answering telephone, answering questions and providing information and assistance, responding to inquiries, directing callers to appropriate individual or department.

Performs ground maintenance and general clean-up around water system facilities. Checks properties for vandalism or malfunctions.

Performs related duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

High school diploma or HSE and must be at least 18 years of age.

Ability to meet all Department hiring and retention requirements, including passage of a drug test.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures, including OSHA guidelines and safety precautions practices applicable to working with a variety of chemicals, cleaners, oils, solvents, etc., with the ability to read and understand label directions for correct mixing and use of supplies and chemicals.

Working knowledge of water distribution system processes and operations with the ability to perform maintenance and repairs and ensure proper and efficient operation of equipment.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation with ability to prepare correspondence and written reports as required.

Ability to properly operate heavy and light equipment including dump truck, forklift, backhoe, loaders, concrete saws, pallet jack, pressure washer, and cleans greases and oils mechanical equipment and tools.

Ability to properly operate hand and/or power tools hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, air nozzle, air compressor, driver, ratchet, files, mop, broom, gauge, shovel, and diamond tip saw.

Ability to properly perform preventative maintenance, diagnose problems, and repair equipment as needed.
