Supervision

DEFINITION To assist in the supervision and implementation of structured recreational, educational, and enrichment activities for youth participating in seasonal day camp programs. This position requires staff to supervise campers in all program areas, including swimming pool environments, and to enter the water as needed to ensure camper safety.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Recreation Specialist or designated Parks & Recreation supervisory staff. Exercises direct supervision over assigned youth campers, ages 5–12.

Essential Job Functions
  • Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Actively monitor campers in all environments including classrooms, playgrounds, swimming pools, gymnasiums, transportation vehicles, offsite field trip venues, and other indoor/outdoor recreation areas.
  • Lead and actively participate in age-appropriate recreational, educational, and enrichment activities including arts & crafts, games, sports, and other group activities.
  • Maintain positive behavior management and enforce camp rules and safety guidelines.
  • Supervise children during organized games and activities.
  • Assist with daily camp routines including camper check-in/check-out, transitions between activities, snack & meal times, and clean-up.
  • Maintain recreation facilities, activity areas, and equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  • Assist with set-up and breakdown of activity spaces and equipment as needed.
  • Take attendance and assist with basic daily documentation as required.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding camper behavior, incidents, injuries, or concerns.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and camp planning discussions.
  • Serve as a positive role model and promote teamwork, inclusion, and respectful behavior among campers.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

For indefinite periods of time – mobility within indoor, outdoor, and aquatic recreation environments; exposure to extreme heat, noise, outdoor weather conditions, and pool environments; walking; standing; stooping; squatting; sitting; reaching; pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds; ability to enter, exit, and move within a swimming pool; ability to remain in the water for extended periods while supervising campers;

clarity of hearing and vision; fine finger manipulation; decision making; operation of a motor vehicle through city traffic.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Basic techniques for supervising children during recreational activities.
  • Age-appropriate recreational and educational activities for youth.
  • Safety practices related to youth programs and outdoor recreation.

Ability to:

  • Supervise and engage groups of children in a positive and safe manner.
  • Follow instructions, policies, and safety procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with children, parents, and staff.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately in emergency or behavioral situations.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Attend all required training sessions prior to the start of the program.
Training And Experience

Previous experience working with children in a camp, recreation, childcare, or educational setting is desirable & preferred, but not required. Candidates 16 years or older preferred.

Licenses And Certificates

Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License is preferred but not required, unless assigned duties necessitate driving.

American Red Cross First Aid & CPR w/AED Certification will be required upon hire. (Class offered during staff training.)
