Aide, Special Education Transition

PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

Assist the teacher(s) in the preparation and management of learning activities and administrative requirements. Assist in the implementation of instructional programs to support students with special needs, including self-help, behavior management, job skills and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher to support students in district programs such as BSP, ECSE, FOCUS, Bulldog Bridge and SAIL.

Job Qualifications:

* High School Diploma or GED

* Valid SBEC Educational Aide certificate

* Associate's Degree or 48 or more college hours or NCLB Para Educator Certification issued by San Jacinto College or other local educational entity

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

* Ability and demonstrated aptitude in the instruction of students in assigned area

* Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

* Knowledge of instructional strategies designed specifically for children with special needs preferred

* Physically capable of meeting all performance responsibilities required with students, including stooping, bending and lifting.

* Ability to communicate with job site supervisors to ensure student success while at work.

MAJOR

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

* Assist the teacher(s) in the preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements. Work under the supervision of teacher(s).

* Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative guidelines, local board policy and state law.

* Assist the teacher(s) in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.

* Assist teacher with supervising and modeling on job sites both on campus and in the community.

* Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher(s).

* Assist students with special needs with toileting, positioning, transferring, and/or lifting as appropriate.

* Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both on and off campus.

* Keep the teacher(s) informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.

* Assist in maintaining neat and orderly classrooms.

* Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings and special events as assigned.

* Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

* Maintain confidentiality concerning student records.

* Exhibit a positive attitude toward others actions by acting as a role model for district employees, students and the community that supports the mission of the district and/or campus goals.

* Demonstrate cooperation by working effectively with others including supervisors, peers, teachers, parents and students.

* Demonstrate dependability by being punctual and present at work, unless for good cause.

* Exhibit reliability by completing work as assigned.

* Exhibit appropriate grooming and dress for the position and responsibility.

* Comply with policies and procedures pertaining to job assignment.

* Demonstrate proper maintenance, care, storage and use of equipment and materials.

* Maintain proper safety and security precautions to prevent unnecessary or unreasonable risk of injury to self or others.

* Perform other duties as assigned by the campus administrators and certified teachers as assigned.

Other Information

The district contributes $400/monthly to the cost of "employee-only" health insurance which is $175/monthly greater than the state required amount of $225/monthly.

Pay Grade:
Paraprofessional, Pay Grade 3, 187 Days

Minimum: $14.31

Midpoint: $17.24
