Special Education Supervisor – Position for the  school year

Reports To:

Director of Special Education

Calendar: 210 Days

Qualifications, Education, and Licensure

The Supervisor for Special Education Services must be able to perform the essential job functions and demonstrate competencies for Administrative Staff. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Requirements for District Supervisor
  • Administrative license in the state of Indiana (Education Administration or Director’s licensure).
  • Certification in Special Education in the state of Indiana.
  • Good working knowledge of Federal and State Special Education laws and regulations.
  • Can develop appropriate procedures as it pertains to Special Education law for certified staff to follow.
  • Minimum of five years experience in providing services to Special Education students (preferred).
  • Commitment to team concept.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Impeccable integrity.
  • Child-centered philosophy.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people.
  • Effective communication skills in writing, speaking, and listening.
Preferred experiences for Supervisor Candidates
  • Administrative experience as it relates to Special Education.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management responsibilities.
  • Experience in building capacity for professional staff and parents.
  • Knowledge and experience in supervision and evaluation of staff.
  • Knowledge and experience dealing with technology for instruction and management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Staff Responsibilities:
  • Recruiting, interviewing, and recommending certified and classified staff for employment.
  • Conducting certified staff evaluations, coordinating teacher support plans, and making recommendations for re-employment and/or dismissal to the South La Porte County Special Education Cooperative’s Director. (Evaluations are done in conjunction with district Principals in each building)
  • Providing supervision in classrooms, itinerant, related service, and diagnostic staff for all Special Education programs in the districts.
  • Providing facilitation for curriculum modifications and material selections.
  • Providing information to school personnel and parents on Special Education law, techniques, and current practices.
  • Reviewing and monitoring special Education files and procedures.
  • Reviewing student IEPs to guarantee compliance with the State and Federal guidelines and requirements.
  • Coordinating and conducting meetings and in-services for Special Education and General Education staff as determined necessary.
  • Meeting routinely with district and itinerant staff.
  • Continually evaluating caseloads, assignments, and appropriate delivery of service in the programs that he/she is assigned.
  • Taking responsibility for initiatives that he/she has displayed strength in and follow through to completion in conjunction with the Special Education Administrative Team.
  • Case Conference and Student Program Responsibilities:
  • Chair all Manifestation Determination Case Conferences when expulsion is considered.
  • Participate as a Case Conference team member as appropriate.
  • Depending on area of supervision – Chair and coordinate all State School (Indiana School for the Deaf and Indiana School for the Blind) conferences for students within the districts served.
  • Depending on area of supervision – Chair nonpublic and home school conferences, assure that the services are developed and implemented.
  • Depending on area of supervision – Chair all Alternative/Residential Case Conferences in conjunction with the Director, assuring development and submission of the application, monitor renewal application, and submit, if needed, within the timeframe designated by Department of Education.
  • Monitor the services, maintain contact, and visit students placed in alternative settings within or outside of our community.
  • Inform Director of all staff needs and changes within the Cooperative in a timely manner.
Administrative and Other Responsibilities
