Organizational Context and Job Purpose
The Olefins & Polymers USA division of INEOS is one of the largest producers of olefins and polyolefins in North America. From its manufacturing locations at Chocolate Bayou and the Battleground Manufacturing Complex, it is a merchant marketer of butadiene, ethylene, polypropylene and high-density polyethylene with annual revenue of over $4b.
The 300-acre INEOS Battleground Manufacturing Complex (BMC) was originally built in 1956 and is located on the Houston ship channel east of Houston, Texas. The site is comprised of 7 polyethylene lines; 1 polypropylene line; a 20 MW Cogen facility; and a state-of-the-art polyolefin technical center that supports research and development, technical services and quality assurance. In 2017, a new world-scale bimodal polyethylene unit was brought online to manufacture high-density polyethylene.
How the Role Fits In
The Advanced Process Control Engineer is responsible for providing process control expertise and support to the olefins and polypropylene processes at the Battleground Manufacturing Complex site. The incumbent will be involved in the development, implementation and troubleshooting of (advanced) process control applications across the site. Key aspects of the role include :
* Troubleshooting and support of existing APC applications
* Develop and implement new APC applications
* Provide advanced process control documentation and training to operations and technical staff
The position will also participate in the evaluation and development phases of process control support projects such as alarm management, control loop monitoring, new control technologies, etc.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The position is accountable for understanding and putting into practice the INEOS 20 Principles. Additionally, this position has a special responsibility to cascade the understanding of these principles throughout their work group.
Accountability: SHE Stewardship
Meet all SHE objectives and comply with all governmental laws and policies for a manufacturing site.
Supporting activities:
* Ensure process hazards are systematically identified, risk assessed, reviewed and managed.
* Always place safe operation or shutdown of the asset ahead of production.
* When in doubt ensure the asset is always taken to its safest state.
* Ensure assets operating envelopes and protective systems are in place to deliver safe operation and maintain asset integrity.
* Identify and establish operating, maintenance, and CAPEX strategies to drive asset integrity and environmental compliance.
* Promote, ensure and sustain commitment to operating assets with no harm to people and to the environment by visibly demonstrating Safety Leadership.
* Ensure that a comprehensive SHE management process delivers and improves safety performance through incident reporting, behavioral awareness, compliance with policies, audits, and corrective action tracking/resolution and incident investigation.
Accountability:
Technical Leadership
* Maintain and continuously improve current applications in Line 3 and PE East (this includes activities such as control loop tuning, model identification through plant step tests, …)
* Issue monthly report with Key Performance Indicators (KPI) of current applications
* Interface with Operations personnel to ensure their needs are met
* Ensure proper documentation and operator training
* Identify possible new APC applications to improve operations. Estimate cost and benefits of each of them in collaboration with operations personnel
* Stays abreast of industry best practices in area of specialty.
* Being aware of developments in process control and APC capability and identifying new improvement opportunities for the site.
* Maintain and improve alarm management systems and reports in collaboration with operations
Education AND Experience
Education and Experience
* Undergraduate degree in Chemical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering or related field; an advanced degree in a related field helpful. Minimum of 5 years' experience in chemical, refining or industrial manufacturing and/or capital projects with prior responsibility for and familiarity with DCS functions and applications.
Experience with Advanced Process Control (APC) is preferred. Strong communications skills, sense of urgency and problem-solving abilities will be critical for the success of this individual. The ability to work across all disciplines and throughout all levels of the organization in a persuasive and credible manner is necessary.
