Basic Purpose
Reporting to the Recreation Site Coordinator, the Recreation Aide I/II/III are responsible for assisting in the implementation of the day camp programs and will work at one of three elementary schools within the North Thurston School Public District. These positions will work 20-40 hours per week from approximately the end of June to the middle of August, with additional hours for program planning/setup, and staff training.
ProgramOverview
- Summer Day Camp: Fun and safe day camp experience for youth ages 6‑12 during the summer and over school breaks. Weekly camps are theme-oriented with creative and healthy outdoor activities, including field trips, swimming, sports, group games, arts and crafts, special guests, and events.
- Playground Pals: Offered in conjunction with the Summer Lunch Program. Children ages 6‑12 can come for lunch and then stay for Playground Pals. On‑site staff provide structured play and craft activities, along with special guests and events.
- Recreation Aide I: $16.84 – $17.80 per hour
- Recreation Aide II: $18.25 – $19.48 per hour
- Recreation Aide III: $19.42 – $20.73 per hour
- Provides stimulating activities in a safe, positive, fun, and challenging environment for children ages 6‑12.
- Plans, delivers, and evaluates age‑appropriate activities to assigned groups, working independently and as a team player under the direction of the Recreation Site Coordinator.
- Maintains a safe working environment and follows all safety policies and procedures.
- Minimum age: 16 (I), 18 (II), 19 (III)
- Background investigation and pre‑employment medical testing completed.
- Physical and mental fitness necessary for the role (with or without reasonable accommodation).
- Valid Washington State driver’s license and acceptable driving record, or personal transportation.
- Valid Food Handler’s certification, or ability to obtain before program start.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certifications, or ability to obtain before program start.
- Verification of identity and U.S. work authorization per the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
- Recreation Aide I:
None. - Recreation Aide II:
One year experience in planning, programming, and supervising recreational/educational activities for children in a school, camp, or recreation setting. - Recreation Aide III:
One year experience; outdoor experience (camping, hiking, water sports, backpacking, etc.).
- Knowledge of various sports, games, arts and crafts, cooperative group activities, and first aid procedures for blood borne pathogens.
- Skill in working with children in a caring and patient manner, effective communication, and appropriate dress.
- Ability to interact with the public and City staff courteously, communicate effectively orally and in writing, assist with planning and coordinating programs for children ages 6‑12, and work in a team setting.
- Recreation Aide III:
Knowledge of conflict management/resolution, including parent/child relationships.
- Part‑time positions < 20 hrs/week are not eligible for health insurance, paid leave, or holiday benefits; covered by Workers’ Compensation.
- Paid sick leave provided to all covered employees (non‑exempt).
- Social Security and federal withholding taxes deducted from wages.
- Part‑time and on‑call positions < 20 hrs/week are not eligible for membership in the Department of Retirement Systems.
