Position title:
Lab Instructor in Physics
Job Type: Non-Tenure-Track
Saint Martin's University, a private Catholic, Benedictine university located in Western Washington, invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position as a physics lab instructor in the Department of Natural Sciences to begin August 2026. A Master's degree in Physics or a related field (or relevant experience as a laboratory instructor) is required, and teaching experience is highly desirable. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience teaching.
Applicants must have a strong commitment to undergraduate education.
The successful candidate will teach 5 to 7 lab sections per semester that support the introductory physics courses in our undergraduate curriculum. These lab sections are mainly used to support the algebra-based/calculus-based introductory lecture courses, but they may also include general education courses, depending on the experience of the candidate. Each lab section typically consists of ~15 students and meets for three hours each week.
Duties will include setup and maintenance of laboratory materials, instruction of relevant material during laboratory sessions, grading laboratory assignments, and assigning of overall grades for the laboratory portion of the course. Morning, afternoon, and/or evening sessions are scheduled to allow all students to fit the labs into their schedules. Instructors are also expected to keep a regular schedule of weekly office hours so they are available to answer student questions.
To apply , please submit a letter of interest, current C.V., unofficial or official copies of graduate and undergraduate transcripts, a one- to two-page statement of teaching philosophy, and 3 names of professional references.
Review of applications will begin June 1, 2026 and continue until the position is filled. Questions and inquiries can be directed to Dr. Arwyn Smalley by email at: alsmalley or by telephone at . Saint Martin's University is dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and pluralistic faculty and staff committed to teaching and working in a multicultural environment and strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and covered veterans.
Saint Martin's University is more than just a place of learning-it's a welcoming community where students, faculty, and staff come together with purpose and heart. Founded in 1895 by the Benedictine monks of Saint Martin's Abbey, we are grounded in the timeless Benedictine values of community, hospitality, and balance. These values, combined with a Saint Martin's liberal arts education, shape our approach to education and daily life, encouraging students to think deeply, act with compassion, and serve with purpose.
As part of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, we honor the integration of faith and reason, the dignity of every person, and a shared responsibility for the common good. Our mission is to form graduates who are not only intellectually curious and ethically grounded, but also deeply committed to building a more just and equitable world. At Saint Martin's, we care about the whole person.
Our supportive campus culture is built to help students thrive-academically, personally, and professionally. We pay special attention to the needs of those who have been historically underserved, and we work intentionally to create an inclusive, respectful, and compassionate environment for all.
We warmly invite mission-driven individuals to join our community-not just to work here, but to be part of something meaningful. Together, we educate students who go on to make a positive difference in their lives, their communities, and the world.
