Position SummaryThe Para educator performs a variety of instructional and/or support duties to assist the school and teachers in instruction, supervision, and education of students with special needs in groups or one-on-one teacher‑to‑student situations. May work with students on an individual basis as well as small groups to complete assigned work. Keeps students on task.

Major Duties and Responsibilities- Works collaboratively by assisting teachers in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing social growth of students in the classroom.
- Assist students with daily tasks such as eating, dressing, toileting, diapering, colostomy care, catheterization, tube feedings, and medication administration as authorized by the school nurse and supervisory staff. Provides health services including dressing changes, oxygen assistance, insulin, nebulizers, and mobility device support.
- Teach independent living skills such as cooking, laundry, personal hygiene, and cleanliness.
- Take action to restrain students who are at risk of harming themselves or others following approved restraint procedures.
- Assist in implementing physical and occupational therapy plans to increase range of motion, mobility, and positioning.
- Escort students to and from recess, playground, bus locations, and may ride the bus with students.
- Communicate with students, parents, and community members with respect, confidentiality, and in accordance with staff directions.
- Oversee student safety during recess, playground, bus duty, crossing guard duty, and hallway supervision, intervening when necessary.
- Provide instructional support and tutoring to students in large groups, small groups, and one‑on‑one situations.
- Support the implementation of visual supports and instructional modifications.
- Provide social skills and organizational instruction under docent guidance.
- Use behavior management plans to assist staff with problem solving, maintaining a conducive learning environment.
- Communicate openly with teachers and other certified staff about behavioral plans.
- Listen to concerns, use appropriate language, observe body language, and employ interpersonal skills to motivate and resolve conflicts.
- Supervise limited discipline measures such as time‑out, loss of recess, and removal from classroom for disruptive behavior.
- Document behavior for teacher assessment and maintain student progress reports.
- Assist in clerical duties such as making copies, operating a fax machine, answering telephones, ordering supplies, and record keeping.
- When duties do not interfere with 1:1 responsibilities, may provide supervision, instructional support, and oversight of student safety under administrator approval.
- Follow Board policies and stay updated on changes.
- Perform other duties as assigned; omissions do not exclude related responsibilities.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Either an Associate’s Degree or 72 quarter credits of college courses numbered 100 or above, or a successful ETS Para Pro test.
- May be required to be certified in first aid, CPR, or operation of defibrillators.
- May be required to be trained in instructional methodologies for reading, writing, mathematics, and special education areas such as restraint, safety, and medication.
