Part I:
Position Summary

The Para educator performs a variety of instructional and support duties to assist the school and teachers in instruction, supervision, and education of students with special needs in groups or one‑on‑one settings. May work with students individually or in small groups to complete assigned work and keep students on task.

The District represents a diverse community with over 50% of students from diverse backgrounds. We seek an individual with successful experience working with culturally diverse families and communities and a commitment to strengthening community engagement.

Part II:
Supervision and Controls over the Work

Paraeducators work under the day‑to‑day direction of the supported staff member(s) and under the direct supervision of the Principal, Principal Designee, or District Designee. Teachers and/or educational staff provide specific directions and oversight. Paraeducators must be familiar with district policies and acquire knowledge of IDEA and Section 504 requirements.

Part III:
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with teachers in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing student social growth in special‑education classrooms, regular classrooms, or one‑on‑one or small group situations.
  • Assist students with daily tasks such as eating, dressing, toileting, including diapering; provide colostomy care, catheterization, tube feedings and/or medications as authorized by the school nurse; provide health services including dressing changes, oxygen, insulin, nebulizers, walkers, wheelchairs, canes, and crutches.
  • Teach independent living skills such as cooking, laundry, general personal hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Take action or assist in taking action to restrain students at risk of harming themselves or others following approved restraint procedures.
  • Assist in implementing physical and occupational therapy plans by working with students to increase range of motion, mobility, and positioning.
  • Escort students in one‑on‑one or small groups to and from recess, playgrounds, bus locations, potentially riding on the bus with students.
  • Communicate with students, parents, and community members with respect and confidentiality, consistent with staff guidance and district policies.
  • Oversee student safety during recess, playground supervision, bus duty, crossing guard duty, hallway supervision, etc.; intervene when students are unsafe.
  • Provide instructional support and tutoring to students in large groups, small groups, and one‑on‑one situations.
  • Support implementation of visual supports and instructional environment modifications to facilitate student engagement.
  • Provide social skills and organizational instruction tailored to each student under certified staff direction.
  • Use behavior management plans to assist staff with problem solving and maintain a conducive learning environment. Prioritize daily tasks and ensure efficient implementation.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers and certified staff to maintain consistent behavioral plans.
  • Listen, observe body language, and use appropriate language before making decisions; employ interpersonal skills to influence, persuade, motivate, and resolve conflicts.
  • Supervise limited discipline measures such as time‑out, loss of recess, removal from classroom when disruptive.
