Position SummaryThe Para educator assists teachers in instruction, supervision, and education of students with special needs in group or one‑on‑one settings. Duties include maintaining student focus, collaborating on curriculum implementation, managing behavior, providing direct support with daily living skills, and ensuring student safety.
Major Duties and Responsibilities- Assist teachers in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing social growth in class.
- Support students in daily tasks such as eating, dressing, toileting, and healthcare needs including colostomy care, catheterization, tube feedings, medications, oxygen, insulin, nebulizers, and mobility aids.
- Teach independent living skills: cooking, laundry, hygiene, and cleanliness.
- Follow school‑approved restraint procedures for students at risk of harming themselves or others.
- Help implement physical and occupational therapy plans to improve mobility and positioning.
- Escort students to recess, bus locations, and, if required, ride on the bus.
- Communicate with students, parents, and community members respectfully and confidentially, following staff and district guidance.
- Supervise student safety during recess, playground, bus duty, crossing guard duty, and hallway supervision.
- Provide instructional support and tutoring in large, small, and one‑on‑one settings.
- Support implementation of visual aids and environmental modifications to facilitate engagement.
- Deliver social skills and organizational instruction tailored to individual student needs under certificated personnel direction.
- Use behavior management plans to assist staff with problem‑solving and maintain a conducive learning environment.
- Communicate actively with teachers and certified staff to ensure consistent behavioral plans.
- Use interpersonal skills to influence, persuade, motivate, and resolve conflicts or sensitive situations.
- Supervise discipline measures such as time‑out, loss of recess, or removal from classroom when necessary.
- Document student behavior and assist with weekly progress reports.
- Perform limited clerical duties: copying, faxing, answering telephones, ordering supplies, and record keeping.
- When other duties do not interfere with 1:1 responsibilities, the position may provide additional supervision, instructional support, or oversee student safety with administrator approval.
- Follow board policies and stay current with updates and changes.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Either an Associate’s Degree or 72 quarter credits of college courses numbered 100 or above, or a passing score on the ETS Para Pro test.
- Certification or willingness to become certified in first aid, CPR, and/or defibrillator operation.
- Training in instructional methodologies for reading, writing, mathematics, and special‑education areas such as student restraint, safety, and medication.
- Experience working with culturally diverse families and communities; commitment to engagement of diverse populations.
- Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities.
- Ability to assist, console, and manage emotionally distressed students.
- Calm, focused, and self‑controlled when dealing with difficult or challenging individuals.
- Ability to follow written and verbal direction and take initiative for clarification.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Knowledge of classroom management and student discipline procedures.
- Strong command of English with proper pronunciation, spelling, syntax, and usage.
- Organizational skills and ability to set priorities for timely work.
- Protection of student confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and good judgment.
- Effective collaboration with staff, students, parents, volunteers, and community members.
