The Department of Ecology is hiring a Senior Stormwater Engineer (Environmental Engineer
5) within the Water Quality Program.
- Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA.
- Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.
- This position is eligible for telework and flexible schedule options.
- A minimum of one day per week is required in the office.

In this newly established position, you will address 6
PPD-Q, a compound used in the manufacture of tires that causes prespawn mortality in Coho salmon. You will work with the 6
PPD Task Force at Ecology to identify, design, and implement best management practices for the treatment of 6
PPD-Q in stormwater. Additionally, you will work with the stormwater permit teams writing and implementing statewide stormwater permits in the Permit and Technical Services section and the Municipal Unit in permit planning and updates to the statewide stormwater manuals. You will work with unit engineers, scientists, planners, hydro geologists, management, permit tees, industry, other state and federal agencies, and the public. You Will Do
- Develop and interpret regulatory and technical guidance, research and current science for the treatment of 6
PPDQ in stormwater. - Meet with Tribes, environmental groups, and members of the public to report on mitigation efforts, new best management practices (BMPs), research results, proposed guidance, tire manufacturers proposals, and other relevant information regarding 6
PPDQ. - Work with Ecology engineers, permit writers, and permit planners to develop regulations and guidance for the Phase I, Phase II eastern and western, and WSDOT permits and technical manuals.
- Attend and contribute to the Stormwater Technical Team (SWTT) meetings, Muni Team meetings, WSDOT permit meetings, and other relevant work groups and technical advisory committees.
- Represent the section as an authority in environmental engineering on municipal stormwater management and treatment.
- Attend conferences, communicate with groups, present research findings and results, and updates to the permits and manuals.
“Registration as a Professional Engineer in Washington or another state with equivalent requirements AND Five (5) years of experience in environmental engineering."
Desired Qualifications- Experience with stormwater management.
- Experience with hydrologic modeling.
- Understanding of 6
PPDQ contamination in stormwater.
