Position: Environmental Engineer 2 (Lacey, WA)

Job Overview

Washington State Parks and Recreation – Environmental Engineer 2 – Lacey, WA. This posting is open until filled, with a first review date of May 26th. The position is a permanent, full‑time role located in Lacey, WA. The environmental engineer provides professional environmental engineering services to the Agency under the general guidance and direction of Registered Professional Engineers. The role supports the planning, design, permitting, and construction of projects, with a primary focus on implementing the Agency’s ADA Remediation Plan and complying with federal accessibility requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Provide independent, professional level recommendations concerning all aspects of engineering design, permitting, and construction under the general guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Prepare engineering reports/studies, contract drawings, technical specifications, and cost estimates for a wide variety of capital development projects, including implementation of the ADA Remediation Plan.
  • Design accessibility improvements to remove identified barriers in compliance with ADA standards, the ADA Remediation Plan, and settlement agreement requirements.
  • Integrate ADA compliance into capital project design, including accessible routes, parking, restrooms, campgrounds, and public‑use facilities.
  • Design bio‑engineered channel stabilization systems.
  • Design buildings, retaining walls, piling, marine structures, and other park infrastructure.
  • Analyze and design stormwater systems in accordance with state and local regulations.
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling of watersheds and drainage systems.
  • Analyze and design on‑site sewage, sewer conveyance, and pumping systems.
  • Analyze and design potable water systems, wells, treatment facilities, and reservoirs.
  • Design roadways, parking areas, and trails, including ADA‑compliant access features.
  • Act as Field Engineer/Project Manager, performing construction site inspections, making recommendations and/or design field‑engineered revisions as required, negotiating change orders, preparing contract payments and closeout documentation, and handling first‑level contract disputes and claims.
  • Travel to conduct field investigations as required to support engineering design and ADA remediation planning.
Telework

This position offers hybrid telework flexibility, if approved by the supervisor; frequent in‑office and on‑site attendance is required to meet business needs.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in sanitary, civil, geotechnical, water resource, environmental, or a closely related engineering field (work experience may substitute for education, up to four years).
  • Two (2) years of civil/environmental engineering experience.
  • Valid unrestricted (except for corrective lenses) driver’s license.
Preferred/Deseired Qualifications
  • Engineer‑In‑Training certificate.

Working Conditions

Standard work hours:
Monday–Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The role is roughly 85% office and 15% traveling or visiting work sites, with some overnight travel possible depending on park locations. Field work may include rough terrain and enclosed spaces.
