Quality Assurance And Quality Verification Technician

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a multimodal agency with a global reputation for excellence. WSDOT is currently seeking a Quality Assurance and Quality Verification Technician to support the successful delivery of construction and engineering projects in the Lacey Project Engineers Office. This position plays a critical role in helping ensure project work meets established quality, safety, and contract standards through quality verification, materials testing, and inspection support. By promoting accountability and quality throughout project delivery, this role helps protect public investments and ensure safe, reliable transportation infrastructure for Washington communities.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Technician will:

  • Perform quality verification and assurance sampling, testing, inspections, and audits of construction materials and activities, including aggregates, structural concrete, embankment and asphalt density, asphalt pavement, grout cubes, and geo-textiles.
  • Review and audit the Design-Builder's materials approval, acceptance, testing, field verification, and quality procedures to ensure compliance with contract documents, WSDOT requirements, industry standards, and Released for Construction plans and provisions.
  • Serve as project materials quality verification support by conducting verification tests and monitoring Design-Builder activities to validate materials quality programs and ensure conformance with Design-Build contracts.
  • Assist Project Inspectors and Quality Verification Engineers with construction oversight, inspections, audits, materials documentation, and verification of highway construction elements, including traffic control, TESC, structural concrete, excavation, drainage, utilities, paving, striping, signing, illumination, and piling.
  • Develop and maintain tracking tools for materials quantities, verification testing frequencies, samples, and test results; maintain the Record of Materials (ROM) and Statistical Analysis of Materials (SAM/SAMS) programs and document findings in Materials Management Systems (MATS).
  • Review engineering calculations, contract plans and specifications, materials documentation, payment documents, wage and payroll records, DBE goals, and apprentice utilization and training programs for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Prepare and generate progress estimates and change orders; compile wage and equipment rates for force account work, monitor material payments, verify change order impacts and approvals, maintain required records and checklists, and track changes in the Construction Contracts Information System.
  • Maintain accurate computerized records and daily activity reports; coordinate material sample delivery to the HQ Materials Laboratory, safely handle materials and equipment, operate state vehicles, and participate in Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) to maintain safe work areas and protect coworkers and the traveling public.

This is a Transportation Technician 3 position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level in the classification series based on candidate qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal "in-training" plan.

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Technician 1 level, the following competencies are required :

  • Basic Technical

    Skills:

    Basic technical skills and/or knowledge of science, mathematical, construction, or engineering principles in support of transportation projects. This includes tasks such as ability to perform basic math, follow written and verbal instructions, use basic field and laboratory equipment, record test results and observations accurately, and execute data entry and documentation using a computer.

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Technician 2 level, the following competencies are required :

  • Engineering Technical Skills and Knowledge:
    Technical skills and/or knowledge of engineering principles in support of transportation projects. This includes tasks such as construction inspection, data collection, drafting, and maintaining project records to ensure compliance with applicable standard and specifications.

    Note:

    Foundational knowledge may be supported by formal classroom training.
