Under the general direction of the Director of Activities, Arts & Athletics, this position is responsible for managing and caring for injuries sustained by high school athletes. Responsibilities include emergency care, injury prevention programs, assessment of injuries, treatment protocols, and preventative measures.

SupervisionThe athletic trainer works under the supervision of the Director of Activities, Arts & Athletics and is familiar with district policies.
Major Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct initial assessment of athlete injury or illness to provide emergency care and determine referral to a physician.
- Organize and manage the daily operation of the athletic training room.
- Apply protective or injury preventive devices.
- Assess and report progress of recovering athletes to coaches, physicians, and parents.
- Work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays; travel with teams to home and away practices and contests.
- Evaluate status of injured athletes and make return-to-play recommendations.
- Act as liaison between health care providers, school, district staff, athletes, coaches, and parents.
- Cooperate with school nurse to determine health conditions affecting participation.
- Maintain accurate records of all injuries, treatments, and protocols.
- Conduct and evaluate head, injury, concussion pre‑screening, recovery protocol, and return‑to‑play status.
- Provide coaches and site athletic director lists of student athletes medically eligible to participate under district and state rules.
- Coordinate specialized medical care and medications with school nurse and ensure coaches trained to administer them.
- Bachelor’s degree in athletic training (Master’s preferred).
- Washington State Athletic Training Licensure or ability to become licensed prior to first day of work.
- National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board Certification.
- Ability to administer health care, screening tests, maintain records, and communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of diagnostic and evaluation techniques, athletic training practices, rules, regulations, record‑keeping, and child development patterns.
- Physical abilities: sit for prolonged periods, respond to emergencies, lift/carry 25‑50 pounds, reach/handle, talk/hear, visual acuity.
- Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability.
- Willingness to work outdoors in all seasons.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changing tasks.
- Calm, focused, and in control when interacting with students, parents, guardians, and community members.
- Initiative to seek clarity and take action when needed.
- Organizational ability to set priorities and accomplish work timely.
- Collaborative with staff, students, parents, volunteers, and community.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Skill in office and computer equipment, standard office software, student information system software.
- 2‑3 years of professional experience as an athletic trainer.
- Experience working with families and youth.
The athletic trainer must be able to lift and/or move 25‑50 pounds, sit, lift, carry, move about, hear, and speak; must have appropriate vision abilities. Travel in school vehicles may be required.
