MISSION & STRATEGIC PLANNING
Providing for a safe and secure campus, and preparing the campus to respond to emergencies, allows others to pursue their learning and life objectives while attending the University.
LEVEL OF SUPERVISION & SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
PART 1:
General Direction:
The employee carries out work assignments in accordance with the policies and objectives established by the supervisor. The employee plans and organizes the work, determines the work methods which will be employed and assists in determining priorities and deadlines. Completed work is reviewed in terms of the employee's effectiveness in producing the expected results.
PART 2:
This position works directly with and oversees Student Security Officers working with the employee. The Public Safety Officer is responsible for daily evaluation of the student's work performance and identifying, and implementing, necessary on-the-job training for students. The position is responsible for identification of training needs as well as developing and implementing training needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

* Patrols university property on foot, bicycle and by motorized vehicle.
* Monitors access control system and closed-circuit TV system
* Responds to calls for service, including but not limited to fire and trouble alarms, suspicious persons on campus, personal and vehicle accidents, reported crimes against persons and property occurring on campus.
* Answers/provides appropriate response to emergency and business-related telephone calls.
* Provides escort services for campus community. Initiates incident reports and conducts investigations.
* Completes accurate logs and records of all security related activities. Work includes rotating shifts.
* Provides parking services/enforcement as needed.
* Develops and consults with campus community members.
* Performs some patrol and escort functions with the use of a motor vehicle or on foot
* Actively engage campus community in addressing public safety concerns.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
COMPETENCIES
Knowledge of:
* Procedures and rules governing access to private buildings and grounds; rules of public behavior; general safety precautions; law enforcement basics; basic investigation procedures
* Basic security and fire alarm systems and procedures.
* Relevant social service agencies.
* Community Oriented Policing.
* Mediation and conflict resolution.
Skilled in:
* Effective oral and written communication skills.
* Contributing to and providing leadership.
* Giving and taking direction in stressful or emergency situations.
* Observing, comparing, or monitoring situations and behaviors to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
* Producing written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar.
* Communicating and working with an ethnically diverse campus community.
* Interpersonal relationships.
* Methods of managing conflict dealing with people.
Ability to:
* Participate and use university sponsored self-defense training
* Communicate effectively, in both oral and written form, including use of two-way radio, telephone, and in face-to-face contacts
* Respond calmly in stress or conflict situations or campus emergencies.
* Operate a personal computer using Windows and Windows applications, Internet and email, and word processing software to include creating and editing a document.
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with persons from diverse educational, economic and cultural backgrounds, as well as persons with disabilities and mobility challenges.
* Demonstrate an understanding of cultural competencies and experience with anti-racist practices.
* Demonstrate a working knowledge of current social and political issues as they relate to racial injustices and implicit biases and the impact these have, in relation to the duties of the Office of Public Safety and on the Office's interaction with the campus community.
* Develop and maintain an extensive knowledge of state criminal law procedures, rules of evidence, safety codes, and university regulations.
